About Gotland
The place felt instantly welcoming. A simple wooden table sat ready for coffee, and the garden sloped gently towards a low fence that framed a view of open fields rather than anything dramatic. We unpacked the car in a leisurely fashion, stopping every few minutes to comment on how quiet it was. No traffic noise, just the occasional call of a bird and the distant hum of a tractor. It was the sort of silence that makes you realise how loud everyday life usually is. That first afternoon we did almost nothing, and it felt marvellous. I dragged a deckchair into a patch of sun and opened the book I had been meaning to finish for months. My partner pottered about inside, then joined me with two mugs of tea that cooled far too quickly in the breeze. We watched a neighbour’s cat stroll across the lawn as though it owned the place, and neither of us moved to shoo it away. Later we wandered down the lane towards the beach, shoes in hand, stopping to examine wildflowers that neither of us could name. The sand was still warm from the day’s sun, and we paddled for a while before turning back when the thought of supper became more appealing than another step. Evening arrived without any fuss. We grilled some sausages on the little outdoor barbecue and ate at the table outside, listening to the low murmur of waves further along the coast. There was no rush to clear up, so we didn’t. Instead we sat with the last of the wine and let the sky shift through shades of pink and orange. I caught myself checking my phone out of habit, then put it face-down on the table and felt oddly proud for managing it. The next morning followed the same gentle pattern. We slept with the bedroom window open and woke to the sound of a cuckoo rather than an alarm. Breakfast was simple toast and jam eaten on the steps, and we spent the rest of the day drifting between the garden and short strolls along the quiet road. A small shop a couple of minutes’ walk away supplied fresh bread and the local newspaper, which we read from cover to cover even though most of the news was about upcoming village events we would never attend. In the afternoon I found myself dozing in the shade with the book still open on my lap, and it struck me how rarely I allow myself this sort of aimless time. There was nothing urgent to do and, for once, that felt like the whole point. |
