We set off from Visby on a sunny afternoon, map in hand and spirits high, heading for our little cottage in Gotland's Tofta. The drive should have been straightforward, but I managed to take a wrong turn down a narrow gravel track that wound between meadows and pine trees. Before long we were properly lost, with only the occasional sheep for company and no sign of the main road. By the time we spotted the wooden sign for the property, I was half convinced we would never arrive at all.

The cottage itself sat quietly among the trees, its red wooden walls glowing in the late light. We stepped inside to find a cosy living space with a wood burner and a small kitchen that felt instantly welcoming. After unpacking the car and making a quick cup of tea, we decided to stretch our legs before supper. That is when the real adventure began.

Instead of following the obvious path towards the beach, we wandered off down a smaller track that disappeared into the undergrowth. The further we went, the quieter it became, until all we could hear was birdsong and the soft crunch of pine needles underfoot. We stumbled upon a tiny clearing with a weathered bench overlooking a meadow full of wildflowers. It felt like a place no one else knew about, and we sat there for ages, watching butterflies drift between the blooms.

Later, still following our noses rather than any map, we found ourselves on a sandy path that led to a secluded stretch of shoreline. The sea stretched out calm and silver, with only a few gulls wheeling overhead. We collected a few smooth stones and skipped them across the water, laughing when mine sank straight away. It was the sort of spot you would never notice if you stuck to the main routes, and the peace of it was perfect after the earlier confusion.

That evening, back at the cottage, I found myself thinking about how often I rush from one planned sight to the next. Getting lost had turned out to be the best part of the day, and it reminded me that sometimes the unplanned moments are the ones that stay with you longest. The next morning we woke to birdsong and the smell of fresh coffee, already wondering what other hidden corners we might discover if we simply followed our curiosity again.
