We'd only just pulled up outside the little red cottage in Gotlands Tofta when the satnav decided to send us down a gravel track that ended in someone's back garden. After a quick reverse and a few embarrassed waves we found the right turning, parked on the grass and stepped out into a warm afternoon breeze that already felt like proper summer. The house itself was simple and welcoming, with a wooden deck that looked straight out towards the sea, and we wasted no time dumping our bags and heading straight out on foot to stretch our legs.

The coastal path began only a few minutes from the door, a sandy track that wound between low pines and open meadows full of wildflowers. We had planned a longer loop that would take us past the old lighthouse and down to the pebbly beach, but the forecast had promised a cooler day and the sun was already beating down harder than expected. After half an hour we were both peeling off layers and stopping every few steps to sip water, so we shortened the route and simply followed the shoreline instead. The sea glittered beside us, flat and calm, and the occasional dip of our toes in the shallows felt like the best decision we had made all day.

Further along the path we came across a small wooden jetty where a couple of locals were fishing, and we paused to watch the swallows darting low over the water. The gentle sound of waves on the stones made the whole place feel slower somehow, as if the island had its own pace and we were finally matching it. We kept walking until the path opened onto a wider stretch of sand, then turned back when the heat started to make our shirts stick. By the time we reached the cottage again the deck was in full shade and we collapsed into the garden chairs with cold drinks from the fridge, laughing about how a simple stroll had turned into our main adventure of the day.

That evening the breeze finally picked up and cooled the air, so we wandered out once more for a shorter stroll before bed, this time along the quiet lane that ran behind the houses. It struck me, as we watched the last light fade over the fields, how often I pack too much into a holiday and then feel surprised when the simplest walks end up being the bits I remember. Here in Gotlands Tofta the coast had done the planning for us, and I was quietly glad we had let it.
