About Gotland
We had barely left Visby when the sat nav decided to play silly beggars and sent us down a farm track that ended in a gate. By the time we turned around and found the right lane to Tofta, the afternoon sun was already low and our stomachs were rumbling. Still, the moment we pulled up outside Gotlands Tofta the small mishap felt worth it. The cottage sat quietly among pine trees, its red wooden walls glowing against the grass, and the air smelled of warm resin and sea salt.

After we unpacked the car we did not rush anywhere. We simply carried the bags inside, opened every window, and let the evening breeze move through the rooms. The kitchen was small but perfectly stocked with the basics, so we made cheese sandwiches and carried them out to the little wooden table on the deck. From there we could see the path that led down to the beach, but neither of us felt any hurry to walk it just yet.

The next morning began the same way, only slower. We woke to birdsong rather than an alarm, made coffee, and carried our mugs onto the deck again. The sun was already warm enough for bare feet, so we stayed there for what must have been two hours, watching shadows shift across the grass and listening to the faint rush of waves. Later we wandered along the sandy track toward the shore, not really aiming for anything in particular. We found a patch of dry grass just above the waterline, spread out a blanket, and stayed until the light started to turn golden.

Back at the cottage the afternoon stretched out in front of us with nothing planned. I read half a novel while my partner dozed in the hammock strung between two pines, and every so often one of us would get up to fetch more water or another cushion. It felt almost indulgent to move at that pace, yet neither of us wanted to break the spell. In the evening we grilled sausages on the little barbecue and ate them straight from the plate, fingers sticky with ketchup, while the sky faded from pink to deep blue.

By the third day the pattern had settled into something comfortable. We would walk to the small shop in Tofta for fresh bread, then spend the rest of the daylight hours drifting between the deck, the beach, and the hammock. I caught myself checking my phone less often, and when I did notice the time it was usually because the sun had moved enough to need another layer of sun cream. The simple rhythm of slow mornings and unhurried afternoons began to feel like the real point of the trip.

On our last afternoon we sat on the deck once more, the same cheese sandwiches in our laps, and watched a small boat drift along the horizon. I realised I had not thought about work emails since the first evening, and the thought made me smile rather than anxious. We still had the drive back to catch, yet for those last hours the only thing that mattered was the warmth on our skin and the quiet between the pines.
