We set off for Gotland Klintehamn on a bright Thursday morning, the ferry from the mainland feeling like the proper start of our holiday. The crossing was smooth enough until I realised I'd packed the house keys instead of the car keys in my jacket pocket, which meant a frantic dash back to the car deck just before docking. My partner found it hilarious, of course, and I spent the rest of the drive to the house muttering about my own daftness while the Swedish countryside rolled past in soft greens and greys.

The house itself sits just outside the little harbour village, a neat red wooden place with white trim and a gravel drive that crunched under our tyres as we pulled up. It looked exactly like the photos, only better in the late afternoon light, with the garden already dotted with late summer flowers and a small patio that caught the sun. The key box worked first time, thank goodness, and stepping inside felt like walking into someone's well-loved summer home rather than a rental. The living room had that cosy, slightly worn feel that makes you want to kick your shoes off straight away, with a big sofa facing the windows and a wood burner that promised proper evenings once the evenings turned cooler.

We wandered through to the kitchen, where someone had left a handwritten note about the best bakery in Klintehamn and how to work the coffee machine. The bedrooms upstairs were simple and bright, with crisp linen and those little touches that make all the difference, like extra blankets folded at the foot of each bed. Outside, the garden had a barbecue and a couple of deckchairs already set out, and beyond that a path that seemed to lead towards the coast. We didn't go far that first evening, just far enough to stretch our legs and watch the light fade over the fields.

What struck me most was how quickly the journey stress melted away. The ferry mishap already felt like one of those stories we'd laugh about later, and the house had that immediate sense of welcome that makes you feel at home before you've even unpacked properly. Sitting on the patio with a glass of wine from the local shop, watching the sky turn pink over the treetops, I found myself thinking how rare it is to arrive somewhere and feel instantly settled. Klintehamn itself is tiny and quiet, with just enough shops and cafes to keep you going without feeling like a tourist trap, and the house seemed perfectly placed for early morning walks or lazy afternoons doing very little. By the time we headed back inside to make supper, I was already wondering why we hadn't booked longer.
