I had been on the road for what felt like forever by the time the ferry from Nynashamn finally docked in Visby. My partner and I had packed the car to the brim with what we thought were essentials, only to realise halfway across that we'd left the bag with the kettle and teabags sitting on the kitchen table back home. By the time we drove the short stretch south to Fide, the sun was low and golden, and we were both half laughing, half starving.

The house sat just off a quiet lane, surrounded by open fields and a few scattered pines. It looked exactly like the photos: a neat wooden cottage with a small porch and a garden that sloped gently toward a low stone wall. We parked on the gravel drive and the first thing that hit me was the quiet. Not silence exactly, but the kind of stillness you only notice after hours of engine noise and ferry announcements. A blackbird was singing somewhere in the hedge, and the air smelled faintly of grass and sea.

We found the key in the lockbox exactly where the instructions said, and the door opened with that satisfying old wooden creak. Inside it was warm and simple. Pale wooden floors, a small living room with a couple of sofas, and a kitchen that looked like someone had actually cooked proper meals in it. The kettle situation was still a problem, but there was a decent cafetiere and a jar of instant coffee waiting on the counter, which felt like a small mercy. We dumped our bags and stepped straight out the back door again because the evening light was too good to waste.

The garden had a wooden table and two mismatched chairs. We sat there with mugs of coffee and watched the light fade over the fields. A neighbour's dog barked once, far off, then nothing. It struck me how quickly the day had shifted from the stress of the ferry queues and our silly forgotten bag to this strange, gentle calm. I had been so focused on getting here that I had almost forgotten why we came in the first place.

Later we walked the short lane toward the little church in Fide. The building looked older than anything back home, its white walls almost glowing against the darkening sky. We didn't go inside, just stood by the gate reading the names on the old gravestones until the midges found us. On the way back we passed a couple on bicycles who nodded hello, and it felt oddly reassuring to be acknowledged without any fuss.

Back at the cottage we heated up some soup we'd bought in Visby and ate it at the kitchen table with the windows open. The mishap with the kettle already felt like part of the story rather than a problem. I kept thinking about how easy it is to carry travel stress right through the front door, and how quickly a place like this can make you put it down. The house didn't try to impress us. It just let us arrive, settle, and notice the quiet we had been missing all day.
