We set off early for Gotland and the drive felt endless, with the ferry from the mainland adding another layer of waiting that left us both a bit frayed by the time we finally rolled into the little lane leading to Faroesund. My partner had printed the directions in case the sat nav let us down, but in the rush to leave the house I had managed to grab the wrong sheet, so we spent a good ten minutes circling the same quiet stretch of road while the sun dipped lower. When we finally spotted the wooden sign and pulled in, the relief was instant.

The cottage sat just back from a narrow track, its pale timber walls glowing in the late light and a neat little porch already promising somewhere to sit with a coffee. We stepped out to the soft sound of waves somewhere close by and the faint smell of pine and salt in the air. The garden was simple, a stretch of grass with a few wildflowers and a low fence that opened onto a footpath, and I found myself standing there longer than planned, just taking it in.

Inside, the place felt calm and welcoming. The kitchen had everything we needed without being fussy, and the living area had big windows that let the evening light pour across the wooden floor. We dropped our bags and wandered out again almost straight away, following the path that led down to a small stretch of shoreline only a short walk away. The water was calm, the sky streaked with soft pinks and greys, and we stood there watching a couple of seabirds skim the surface while the breeze tugged at our jackets.

Back at the cottage we unpacked the basics and made a simple supper from what we had brought, eating at the little table by the window. It was quiet in a way that felt new after the long journey, the kind of quiet that makes you notice small things like the creak of the floorboards or the way the light changes as the sun finally slips away. I caught myself thinking how rarely we slow down like this, how easy it is to fill every hour and then wonder where the time went.

Later we sat on the porch with the last of the wine, listening to the faint rustle of leaves and the occasional call of a bird settling for the night. The mishap with the directions already seemed like a small price for arriving somewhere that felt this peaceful right from the start.
