We set off from Visby with the satnav promising a straightforward hour and a half to Burgsvik, yet somehow managed to turn a simple left at a roundabout into a ten-minute detour through a sleepy farm track. My partner laughed so hard she nearly spilled the thermos of coffee, and I had to admit that my sense of direction had taken an early holiday of its own. By the time we rolled up the gravel drive, the cottage stood waiting with its red wooden walls and white trim, looking exactly like the sort of place that belonged on a postcard.

The key was tucked in the usual lockbox, and stepping inside felt like being greeted by an old friend. Sunlight poured across the wooden floorboards, catching on the simple pine furniture and the checked curtains that fluttered in the breeze from the open window. A faint scent of pine and sea air lingered, and I found myself kicking off my shoes without even thinking. The living room was cosy rather than grand, with a couple of well-worn armchairs pulled up near the wood burner and a low table already set with a jar of wildflowers someone had left behind.

Outside, the garden sloped gently toward a low fence, and beyond that the fields stretched toward the coast. We wandered down the short path that led to the nearby beach, shoes in hand, and the sand felt cool underfoot even in the afternoon sun. The water was calm enough for a quick paddle, and my daughter declared it the perfect temperature for building sandcastles while I tried, unsuccessfully, to keep the seagulls from stealing our crisps. It was the sort of afternoon that stretched pleasantly without any particular plan.

Back at the cottage, we unpacked the groceries we had picked up in Burgsvik village, just a short drive away. The kitchen was small but practical, with enough plates and pans for a proper family meal, and I found myself humming as I chopped vegetables for a simple pasta. Later, we sat on the little deck with glasses of wine and watched the light fade over the fields. The quiet was noticeable in the best way, broken only by the occasional bird call and the soft rustle of leaves.

I caught myself thinking how rarely we manage to slow down like this at home, where the days tend to blur together with work and school runs. Here, even the smallest things, like finding the perfect spot for the deckchairs or deciding whose turn it was to light the barbecue, felt worth savouring. By the time we turned in, the mishap on the drive already seemed like part of the charm, a reminder that getting slightly lost had led us exactly where we needed to be.
