We had a bit of a giggle on the way to the cottage near Ljusne. I'd carefully plotted the route from Gavle, but somehow took the turning for the wrong forest track and ended up bouncing along a gravel path that narrowed with every metre. My partner was convinced we were about to meet a tractor coming the other way, and the kids thought it was all part of the adventure until we finally spotted the little wooden sign for our place. By the time we pulled up outside the red-painted house, the relief was almost as welcome as the view.

The cottage sat quietly among tall pines with a neat lawn sloping down towards a small inlet. Nothing fancy, just that classic Swedish simplicity that makes you feel you've arrived somewhere properly restful. We tumbled out of the car, stretched our legs, and immediately noticed how clean the air smelled, like pine needles and fresh water mixed together. The wooden steps to the veranda creaked under our feet, the sort of sound that tells you the house has been here a while and isn't in any rush.

Inside, the open-plan living area felt instantly welcoming. Pale wooden floors, a couple of comfy sofas, and a dining table big enough for board games after tea. The kitchen was compact but well thought out, with everything we needed for simple meals. We unpacked the basics we'd brought from the supermarket in Soderhamn, then the children claimed the loft bedroom with its sloping ceiling and skylight, already planning which way they'd sleep.

What struck me most on that first afternoon was how little we needed to do. We wandered down to the water's edge, where a small jetty invited us to sit with our feet dangling. The inlet was calm, the sort of place where you could watch dragonflies for ages without feeling you'd wasted time. Later we fired up the barbecue that came with the house and ate outdoors, the evening sun still warm even though the calendar said autumn was on its way. Conversation drifted between plans for tomorrow and quiet moments of just listening to the birds.

As the light began to fade, I found myself thinking how easy it is to forget that proper rest doesn't require grand plans or packed itineraries. We'd only been here a few hours, yet the cottage already felt like it had slowed us down in the best possible way. Sometimes the best part of a family break is simply arriving and letting the place do the rest.
