About Dalarna
We set off for our little cabin near Aeppelbo on a crisp October morning, the kind of day that makes you think the satnav knows what it is doing. It did not. We ended up on a gravel track that narrowed until the birch trees were practically brushing the wing mirrors, and my confident shortcut turned into a five-point turn in someone else's driveway while a rather unimpressed elk watched from the edge of the field. By the time we reached Nybofjaell the light was already fading, which is exactly what October does in Dalarna; it steals the afternoon before you have finished your coffee.

The cabin sat in a clearing ringed by pines and a few apple trees still holding onto their last red fruit. Smoke drifted from the chimney of the neighbouring house, and the air smelled of damp earth and woodsmoke. We fumbled with the key safe in the half-light, fingers stiff from the cold, then stepped inside to the welcome smell of pine floorboards and the faint sweetness of last year's apples someone had left in a bowl. The wood burner was already laid, which felt like a small kindness from the owners, and we got it going straight away. Outside the windows the garden sloped gently toward a little stream that was busy carrying fallen leaves downstream.

That first evening set the tone for the whole stay. The days were short, so we did not rush anywhere. Instead we walked the forest paths that started right behind the cabin, kicking through drifts of yellow and rust-coloured leaves. The light stayed soft and low, turning everything golden for about twenty minutes each afternoon before the temperature dropped and we headed back for tea. One morning we drove the short distance into Aeppelbo itself, where the little supermarket had just put out its winter displays of saffron buns and cloudberry jam. We bought far too many and ate them by the wood burner while rain tapped on the roof.

The seasonal shift made everything feel slower and more deliberate. We lit candles early, read books we had been meaning to finish for months, and talked about things we normally put off until "later". I caught myself checking my phone less, partly because the signal was patchy and partly because the view of mist rising off the fields at dusk was more interesting than any notification. There was a quiet satisfaction in simply being somewhere that asked so little of you.

By the time we left, the first proper frost had arrived. The grass crunched under our boots as we loaded the car, and the apple trees looked bare and elegant against the pale sky. The journey home felt longer, though we took the proper road this time. I kept thinking about how a few short days in that quiet clearing had managed to rearrange my sense of what counts as urgent.
