I had been driving for what felt like hours through the quiet forests of Dalarna when the satnav decided to send me down a gravel track that was clearly meant for tractors. My little rental car bounced along like a shopping trolley with a wonky wheel until I finally spotted the sign for Klaeppenbacken. By the time I pulled up, I was convinced I had taken the wrong turning three times over and was probably about to disturb some poor farmer having his afternoon coffee.

The first person I met was a woman called Ingrid who was out walking her dog along the edge of the property. She stopped, tilted her head, and asked in perfect English if I was the one who had been lost for the last half hour. I laughed and admitted the satnav had led me astray, and she chuckled, saying the forest paths had fooled better drivers than me. We stood chatting for a few minutes while her spaniel sniffed around my tyres, and she told me she had lived nearby all her life and still got turned around after a heavy snowfall.

A little later, when I was trying to work out which key opened the front door, a man called Lars wandered over from the next house. He was carrying a bucket of berries and offered me a handful without even asking my name. When I explained I had just arrived and was still getting my bearings, he nodded and said the best thing was to sit outside with a cup of coffee until the place felt like home. We ended up talking about the local fishing spots and how the midges always seemed to know when you had forgotten your hat.

By the time I had unpacked my bag, another neighbour, a cheerful woman called Anna, had appeared with a small jar of lingonberry jam. She said it was from her own bushes and that new arrivals always needed something sweet to mark the start of their stay. We stood on the porch while she pointed out which trees marked the boundary and warned me that the cuckoo in the woods would wake me at dawn whether I liked it or not.

What struck me most was how quickly these small conversations made the place feel less like a holiday let and more like a borrowed corner of someone else's life. I had come expecting quiet and scenery, but instead found myself remembering names and little stories before I had even boiled the kettle. It was a gentle reminder that sometimes the best part of arriving somewhere new is not the view from the window, but the voices you hear before you have even unpacked your shoes.
