About Dalarna
The journey had been one of those classic travel sagas where everything goes slightly wrong in the most benign way possible. The cinnamon bun incident at Stockholm Central was entirely my fault. I saw it gleaming in a bakery window, forgot I had a train to catch, and ended up sprinting through the station with flakes of pastry cascading from my jacket like a very low-budget snow machine. I made the train by approximately four seconds. The fishy car was just bad luck, though I suspect the previous renter had been on a serious herring expedition. But standing there in the late afternoon sun, rubbing my knee and picking petals from my hair, I felt something shift. The house sat among birch trees with that distinctive Falun red paint that seems to glow from within, white trim catching the light like icing on a gingerbread cottage. A small lake glimmered perhaps fifty metres away through the trees, and the only sound was a woodpecker somewhere overhead doing what sounded like urgent DIY. I fumbled with the key box, dropped the code sheet, retrieved it from beneath the car, and finally got inside. The first thing that hit me was the smell of pine and something else, something clean and slightly nostalgic that I eventually placed as the wooden sauna heating up from the afternoon sun. The owners had left a handwritten note on the kitchen table wishing me welcome, alongside a packet of local coffee and what I later discovered were homemade pepparkakor biscuits. I ate three immediately, standing at the counter, still wearing my coat. The living area had one of those proper wood-burning stoves, the black iron kind that looks like it could tell stories, and windows that framed the greenery outside like a living painting. I kept catching myself just standing there, holding a biscuit, staring at nothing in particular. Travel fatigue does odd things to you. Or perhaps it was something else, the particular stillness of a place that has not been designed to impress but simply exists as itself. I unpacked badly, leaving most things in my case, and wandered down to the water's edge in my socks because I had forgotten to change my shoes after the flower incident. The lake was mirror-calm, bordered by reeds and the occasional driftwood sculpture left by previous visitors. A family of ducks eyed me with the suspicious neutrality that ducks have perfected over millennia. I sat on a rock and watched the light change for what felt like hours but was probably twenty minutes, my feet going slightly numb in the damp grass. That evening I managed the sauna properly, or at least I think I did. I may have poured too much water on the stones and emerged looking like a boiled lobster, but I emerged happy. I sat on the little wooden deck as the sky turned that particular Scandinavian blue that lasts for hours, drinking the local coffee and eating another biscuit, and I thought about how I had arrived in such a ridiculous state, covered in pastry and flowers, and how none of it mattered now. Some places reward the journey immediately. Others make you wait. Borlange gave me a lake, a woodpecker, and a quiet so complete that I could hear my own thoughts for the first time in months. I went to bed early, slightly sunburned from the deck, still in my socks, and slept better than I had in years. |
