About Blekinge
The mishap, because there is always one with us, came during our stop in Solvesborg proper. I had popped into a supermarket for supplies, smug about my handful of Swedish phrases, and emerged with what I believed to be coffee, milk, and bread. The bread was actually some kind of crispbread that could double as roofing material. The milk was filmjolk, which I discovered later is basically yoghurt that has gone to university and developed opinions. And the coffee? Decaf. I do not know who I offended in that ICA supermarket, but they got their revenge. We laughed about it all the way to the cottage, my partner doing that wheezing thing he does when he finds something genuinely funny, me cradling my useless purchases like disappointed children. But here is the thing about arriving at a Swedish summer cottage in late June: the season makes a fool of you, then immediately forgives you. The light was already doing that impossible Scandinavian thing where evening looks like afternoon and afternoon looks like a promise. Our cottage sat among proper old pines with the Baltic just visible through gaps in the trees, glittering in a way that made my decaf humiliation feel very small and far away. The air smelled of warm resin and something saltier underneath, and the whole place had that particular stillness of northern summer where the world seems to be holding its breath because it knows how fleeting this all is. I stood on the wooden deck with my terrible filmjolk and watched the sky stay stubbornly bright at half nine. The season was everything. Those long hours of light meant we unpacked slowly, almost luxuriously, without any pressure of darkness falling. We left doors open. We kept wandering back outside for no reason except that we could. Even the mosquitoes, which arrived in polite Swedish formation around ten, seemed like part of the deal rather than an intrusion. This was midsummer territory, where the sun barely dips below the horizon and your body forgets what time feels like. The cottage itself was simple in that deliberate Scandinavian way: pine floors, a kitchen that had seen decades of fish suppers, windows that framed the greenery like paintings. But it was the season that made it sing. In winter this place would be a different creature entirely, hunkered down against the dark and cold. In late June it was all invitation. The outdoor furniture practically begged for occupation. The little path down toward the shore seemed to glow with use and possibility. I found myself thinking, as I inevitably do on holiday, about how rarely I let myself arrive somewhere properly. Usually I am already planning the next thing, the next meal, the next activity. But that Blekinge light, that endless soft evening, slowed something in me without my permission. My partner had fallen asleep on the deck chair with his book on his chest, snoring slightly. The decaf sat cooling and unloved. The filmjolk remained a mystery for another day. And I just stood there in my jumper that I had not needed, watching the sky stay blue and feeling, for once, exactly where I was. The gravel track that had infuriated me hours earlier now seemed like a fair price of admission. Some places make you work a little to find them, and Blekinge in midsummer turns out to be worth every wrong turn and every cultural supermarket mishap. I went inside eventually, made a proper cup of tea with the one thing I had bought correctly, and started planning a morning walk to the shore while knowing, with the confidence of someone surrounded by endless light, that planning was almost unnecessary. The day would wait for us. The season insisted on it. |
