About Blekinge
I should have known the holiday proper had begun when I tried to unlock the wrong door. Three hours from Copenhagen, two ferries, one regrettable petrol station hot dog, and there I was in Ramdala, just outside Karlskrona, jiggling a key at what turned out to be the neighbour's woodshed. The actual cottage sat ten metres to the left, looking thoroughly amused through its red-painted windows.

The journey had been one of those gradual unravellings that characterise any honest trip to Blekinge. You start with purpose, motorway discipline, precise ferry times. Then somewhere after Ronneby the roads narrow, the pine forests close in, and you find yourself behind a tractor hauling hay at eleven miles per hour, both of you entirely at peace with the arrangement. I had not been at peace. I had been needing the loo since Karlshamn and developing an irrational grudge against every road sign promising Karlskrona was "just ahead" for the forty-fifth time.

The mishap with the woodshed door was not my fault, entirely. The instructions mentioned a "red cottage near the water" and frankly, in Ramdala, that describes roughly everything. I stood there in the gravel drive, case in hand, feeling the particular foolishness of the solo traveller who has nobody to blame, nobody to laugh with, and nobody to suggest perhaps checking the house number. A magpie watched from the fence. I chose to interpret its expression as sympathetic rather than judgemental.

Then I found the proper entrance, and the door opened with that satisfying weight of a well-kept Swedish summer house, and I stepped inside and immediately forgot my own incompetence.

The place smelled of pine and something else, something clean and slightly salty from the nearby Baltic. The living area opened straight onto a view I had not expected despite having seen photographs. Photographs lie by omission. They do not convey the particular quality of late afternoon light filtering through birch trees, or the way the water visible through the kitchen window catches that light and holds it, gently, like someone pausing mid-conversation. I stood in the doorway with my suitcase still outside and simply looked.

The kitchen was compact in that efficient Scandinavian way, everything where your hand expects it. I made coffee with the machine provided, which felt like the only reasonable response to the situation. The mug warmed my palms. Through the window, a small wooden jetty extended into the water, and I could see the outline of islands in the distance, the archipelago beginning its scatter toward the horizon. Somewhere nearby, probably at the property's edge, I could hear the faint suggestion of a stream or perhaps just water moving against rocks.

I had planned to unpack immediately, to establish order, to be sensible. Instead I took my coffee outside onto the small terrace, wearing the same clothes I had travelled in, and sat on a wooden chair that creaked comfortably beneath me. The air carried that specific coastal coolness you get in Blekinge even in summer, a reminder that the sea is never far. A dragonfly paused on the railing, reconsidered me, moved on.

What struck me then, and what I keep returning to when I think of that arrival, was the particular quality of stillness. Not emptiness, not boredom, but the held-breath feeling of a place that has been waiting and does not mind that you took your time getting there. I thought of my urgency at the ferry terminal, my irritation with the tractor, my competitive relationship with road signage. All of it seemed slightly ridiculous now, slightly foreign to who I was in that chair with cooling coffee and a magpie's forgiveness.

The neighbour eventually appeared, collecting something from the actual woodshed. We nodded at each other. No explanation was offered for my earlier trespass, and none was requested. This is the etiquette of holiday places, I am learning. Everyone has arrived foolishly at some point. Everyone has mistaken one red cottage for another.

I finished my coffee as the light began its slow shift toward evening. The suitcase remained by the door, half-forgotten. Somewhere in Karlskrona proper, ten minutes down the road, restaurants would be opening, the naval base would be completing its day's business, the UNESCO-listed squares would be settling into evening. I would go there tomorrow, perhaps, or the day after. For now, the water and the birch trees and the particular creak of that wooden chair seemed entirely sufficient company.

The key, I noticed, had a small wooden tag with the house number clearly marked. I held it in my palm for a moment, smiling at myself, then slipped it into my pocket where it would remain, properly identified, for the rest of my stay.
