About Blekinge
The mishap came at the worst possible moment. Nature called, as they say, and there I was with a full bladder, a hire car that had seen better days, and absolutely no phone signal. I did what any sensible British person would do: I panicked quietly, then drove faster. The gravel became more enthusiastic, the trees closed in, and just as I was contemplating the indignity of a roadside situation, the track opened up and there it was. A red wooden house with white trim, the kind Sweden seems to produce effortlessly, sitting among birch trees with a lake glinting through the gaps like someone had left a window open to another world. I practically fell out of the car. The key was under a flowerpot, because of course it was. This is rural Blekinge, not central London. No key safe with a four-digit code and a twenty-page instruction manual. Just a pot, a key, and an implicit trust that you are not the sort of person who steals holiday cottage keys from under flowerpots. The first thing that struck me, once I had dealt with my urgent business and returned to something approaching dignity, was the silence. Not the uncomfortable silence of an awkward dinner party, but the thick, generous silence of a place that has never needed to shout for attention. I stood on the wooden deck with a cup of tea that I had made with slightly too much milk because I was still flustered, and I listened to absolutely nothing happening. A woodpecker somewhere. Water lapping. My own breathing, which I suddenly realised I had been holding. The cottage itself was simple in the best way. Proper wooden floors that creaked with personality. A kitchen that suggested actual cooking might happen, rather than the usual holiday pretence. I opened the fridge to find it empty except for a small note in Swedish and a bottle of elderflower cordial left by the owners. I spent ten minutes trying to translate the note with an offline dictionary app, failed completely, and decided it probably said something welcoming and not at all important like "the boiler explodes on Thursdays." That evening, still disorientated from the drive and my own spectacular lack of preparation, I decided to walk before I lost the light. I had no map, no plan, and no particular destination. This is not like me. I am the person who prints walking routes three weeks in advance. But something about getting so thoroughly lost on the way in had shaken something loose. I went left where I might have gone right, followed a path that narrowed to almost nothing, and found myself at a small jetty on a lake I later learned was not even named on most maps. I sat there until the mosquitoes found me, which took approximately four minutes and thirty seconds. I watched the water turn orange, then pink, then that particular blue-grey that Scandinavian summers do so well. I thought about how I had spent the last five years planning holidays down to the nearest toilet stop, and how this unplanned, slightly desperate evening was already more memorable than any carefully curated itinerary I had ever constructed. Getting lost, I decided, was not a mishap at all. It was the whole point. |
