About Valencia
The mishap came within about thirty seconds of arrival. I was so desperate to stretch my legs and breathe some actual Spanish air that I flung open the car door with theatrical enthusiasm. Straight into a hedge. A very solid, very spiky hedge that had clearly been minding its own business. I spent the next five minutes picking little green leaves out of my hair while an elderly neighbour watched from his balcony with the kind of amused patience you only really see in Mediterranean countries. I gave him a cheerful wave. He raised his coffee cup in what I choose to believe was solidarity rather than mockery. But here's the thing about arriving somewhere truly lovely when you're completely shattered: the exhaustion somehow makes everything more vivid. I shoved my cases through the door and the first thing that hit me was the smell. Not the chemical whiff of a hotel, but something warmer. Clean tiles, a hint of something citrusy from the garden, that particular dry heat that only coastal Spain seems to manage properly. The villa opened up in a way that made me actually stop and breathe. The living space was simple and unpretentious, the sort of place that knows exactly what it is. No fussy ornaments trying too hard, just light pouring through windows and furniture that looked like it had actually been sat on. I found myself doing that thing where you wander from room to room without purpose, running your hand along doorframes, peering into cupboards for no reason whatsoever. The kitchen had one of those big fridges that hum contentedly to themselves, and I immediately started planning a trip to the local mercado. There's something about Spanish kitchens that makes you want to cook properly, even if you're the sort of person whose usual evening meal involves whatever's in the reduced section at Tesco. But it was outside that really stopped me in my tracks. The terrace stretched out like an invitation I hadn't realised I needed. A proper table for eating outside, loungers positioned with the confidence of people who understand sunshine, and a view down towards where I knew the sea must be. I could hear it, faintly, that particular rhythm of Mediterranean waves that sounds nothing like the choppy aggression of British beaches. I made myself a cup of tea using one of those stovetop kettles that takes forever and felt genuinely pleased about the wait. There was no rush here. That was the immediate impression, the thing that settled over me like the warmth of the afternoon. The hedge incident already felt like it had happened to someone else, some frantic version of myself who belonged to airports and deadlines and the particular madness of the M25. I sat on the terrace with my too-hot tea and watched the light start to soften. Somewhere a dog barked lazily. A scooter puttered past in the distance. I thought about how I'd spent the last six months telling anyone who'd listen that I needed a proper break, and how I'd half convinced myself it was just something people say. But sitting there, with leaves still occasionally falling from my hair onto the tiles, I felt something shift. The tightness in my shoulders that I'd stopped noticing because it had become so constant. It was still there, but it was listening to me for once, rather than the other way round. I finished my tea and decided the unpacking could wait. The sea was calling, or at least murmuring politely, and I had a week of absolutely nothing pressing ahead of me. The hedge and I had made our peace. The neighbour had gone inside. And I had already forgotten which drawer I'd put the car keys in, which felt like exactly the right kind of problem to have. |
