About Valencia
I have never been so grateful for air conditioning in my entire life, and I say that as someone who once spent a summer working in a kitchen with a broken extractor fan. The drive from Valencia Airport to Orba had been straightforward enough, or so I thought, until I confidently ignored the satnav and decided to take what I assured my partner was a "scenic shortcut" through the mountains. Three hairpin bends and one deeply questionable dirt track later, we found ourselves behind a tractor moving at roughly the pace of continental drift, the temperature gauge in our hire car creeping steadily towards the red zone. It was late July. The Mediterranean sun was doing what it does best, which is to say, behaving like an angry god.

By the time we finally rolled up to the villa, I had developed what can only be described as a profound personal relationship with the car's air vents. I emerged onto the gravel driveway like a damp, dishevelled figure from a Victorian novel, immediately squinting against the impossible brightness. The whitewashed walls of the house seemed to glow, almost aggressively cheerful, and the swimming pool shimmered with that particular blue that makes you want to weep with relief. My partner, who had maintained a dignified silence throughout my navigational performance, simply walked past me and straight into the water, clothes and all. I did not blame her.

The heat defined everything in those first hours. The cicadas were screaming from the olive trees with a volume that felt personally confrontational. Even the lizards seemed to be moving in slow motion, hugging the shadows of the terracotta pots. I stood in the kitchen, clutching a bottle of water that had gone from refrigerated to tepid in approximately four minutes, and watched a bead of condensation race down my forearm. The tiled floors, blessedly cool beneath my feet, became my new favourite thing in the world. I may have stroked them. I am not proud.

What struck me most was how the season had transformed the ordinary into the theatrical. The bougainvillea climbing the terrace wall was not merely flowering; it was staging an invasion, explosions of magenta against the white plaster. The smell of jasmine hit you in waves as the evening finally, finally began to soften. We had arrived at that peculiar time of day when the light turns golden and everything looks like a postcard, except you are too sweaty to properly appreciate it.

I had imagined myself as one of those elegant travellers who unpacks immediately, perhaps arranges some local produce artfully on the counter. Instead, I spent a solid forty minutes standing motionless in the outdoor shower, fully clothed, letting the water run over me until I felt approximately human again. The season had reduced me to my most basic self, stripped of pretension, motivated almost entirely by the pursuit of shade.

As darkness finally came, bringing with it a warmth that was merciful rather than oppressive, we sat on the terrace with glasses of something cold and local. The heat had broken my usual restlessness; I had no desire to do anything, go anywhere, be anyone other than exactly where I was. The summer had forced a stillness upon me that I had not realised I needed. Somewhere in the valley below, a dog barked, and the sound carried clearly through the dry night air. I thought about my shortcut, my stubbornness, my damp and ridiculous arrival. I smiled into my glass. The season had won, as seasons always do, and I was genuinely glad to have lost.
