About Valencia
I have never been so grateful for a sat-nav in my entire life. There I was, trundling through the Valencian countryside in a hire car the size of a postage stamp, absolutely convinced I was about to discover a hidden village that Google Maps had somehow missed. Turns out I had simply driven past the turning for Betera three times. Three. The third time I actually waved at the same confused cyclist, who by that point must have thought I was conducting some strange automotive survey of the area.

The property itself, when I finally located it, was tucked away in a manner that suggested it wanted to be found by people who truly deserved it. I stumbled out of the car into proper warmth, the kind that wraps around you like a blanket fresh from the radiator. Having packed for what I optimistically called "walking weather," I was already sweating through my supposedly breathable hiking shirt. The local weather, I would soon learn, had absolutely no intention of cooperating with my carefully planned coastal trekking itinerary.

My first morning began with the best of intentions. I had mapped out a glorious hike along the nearby coastline, imagining myself as one of those rugged Mediterranean types who stride along cliffs at sunrise. I woke before six, pulled on my walking boots with the enthusiasm of someone about to conquer nature itself, and stepped outside into what can only be described as an atmospheric sauna. The air was thick, warm, and utterly indifferent to my ambitions. By the time I reached the car, my carefully planned route had already begun to feel like a punishment rather than an adventure.

I drove toward the coast anyway, stubbornness being one of my more reliable personality traits. The beaches near Valencia are genuinely stunning, all golden stretches and that particular blue the Mediterranean does so well. But the heat, even in the early hours, was something else entirely. I managed perhaps forty minutes of actual walking before finding myself strategically positioned beneath a beach umbrella, drinking something cold and judging my life choices. A local dog walker passed by with two enthusiastic spaniels, neither of which appeared to be melting. I felt slightly judged by all three of them.

The gentle self-reflection came later, sitting on the terrace back at the property with a glass of something local and watching the sun do its slow descent. I had planned this holiday around movement, around covering ground and collecting kilometres like they were currency. The Valencian heat had other plans, and perhaps that was the point. There is something quietly revolutionary about allowing a place to dictate the pace rather than arriving with your own agenda laminated and highlighted.

I did walk, of course, but differently than intended. Early mornings became gentle strolls through Betera itself, poking around the local shops before the day turned properly fierce. Evenings brought longer ambles as the temperature dropped to something approaching reasonable. The coastline I had been so determined to conquer in one dramatic gesture instead revealed itself in smaller, more manageable pieces. A sunrise here, a sunset there, the in-between hours spent doing very little indeed.

The property's pool, I should mention, became my unlikely saviour. I had not anticipated becoming someone who plans their day around immersion in water, yet there I was, scheduling walks around the practical necessity of cooling off. It is a peculiar thing to travel somewhere for active adventure and instead discover the profound satisfaction of doing almost nothing, yet doing it thoroughly.

By the end of the week, I had abandoned my original hiking plans entirely. The coastal paths remained, patient and indifferent, waiting for someone with better heat tolerance or more sensible timing. I left with fewer kilometres logged than anticipated but with a genuinely useful reminder that holidays work better when you let them breathe. The sat-nav got me there eventually, and the weather got me to slow down. Sometimes the wrong turns teach you more than the planned route ever could.
