About Tenerife
The journey from Gatwick had been one of those classic package holiday specials: up at four, crammed onto a bus, then a flight where the child behind me spent ninety minutes perfecting his drum solo on the tray table. By the time I collected the hire car at Tenerife South, my brain had the consistency of airport scrambled egg. The drive north took longer than expected because I confidently turned left at Puerto de la Cruz when I should have turned right, ending up in a banana plantation with a satnav that had apparently given up on me entirely. A lovely local chap walking his dog took pity on my frantic three-point turn and pointed me back toward Los Realejos with the patient expression of someone who has rescued many lost Britons before me. I finally found the property up in the hills, tucked away on a quiet residential street where the only sound was a distant cockerel who clearly had opinions about my arrival time. The key was exactly where promised, and I stepped inside already rehearsing my complaint email about the "sea view" I had specifically booked. Then I pushed open the terrace doors and there it was: the Atlantic, glittering and vast, with Mount Teide poking its snowy head above the clouds in the distance. I promptly burst into tears. Not delicate tears, mind you. Proper, ugly, travel-wept tears. Thirty-seven years old and sobbing at a patio table. The cockerel fell silent, presumably embarrassed on my behalf. That first evening, I did absolutely nothing. This was the revelation. I had packed hiking boots, a guidebook bristling with sticky notes, ambitious plans for the Anaga Rural Park. Instead, I sat on that terrace with a supermarket Rioja and watched the sun bleed into the ocean. The temperature hovered around that perfect zone where a t-shirt suffices but a light jumper feels like a comforting hug. Somewhere below, Los Realejos proper carried on its evening business, but up here, time moved differently. The next morning, I discovered the local routine. A gentle stroll down to the town for coffee and a pan con tomate at a tiny cafe where the owner remembered my order by day three. The walk back up was steep enough to justify the afternoon doing absolutely nothing again, which suited me perfectly. I read three novels in a week, something I had not managed in three years. The pages turned sticky with sunscreen, and I did not care. I ventured to the nearest beach once, a small cove with volcanic sand that scorched the soles of my feet. Spent two hours there, swam briefly in water that made me gasp, then retreated to my terrace kingdom. That was enough adventure. More than enough. The property itself became my holiday. Morning coffee watching the mist clear from the valley. Afternoon naps with the shutters half-closed and a warm breeze wandering through. Evening gin and tonics as the lights of Puerto de la Cruz flickered on across the bay. I spoke to almost no one beyond my cafe owner and a brief chat with a neighbour about bin collection days. On my final morning, I packed those unworn hiking boots with something like affection. The guidebook stayed unopened, its sticky notes now sun-bleached and pointless. I had come to Tenerife intending to conquer it and instead surrendered completely, letting the sunshine slow my blood to something resembling a reasonable pace. The cockerel crowed me off the premises, judgmental to the last. I have never been so pleased to see a kettle, and I have never been so reluctant to leave one behind. |
