About Murcia
That was when the mishap happened. In my exhausted wisdom, I decided to reverse our little Fiat closer to the front door to unload the cases. Cue a spectacular crunch. Not the car, thank goodness, but the wheelie bin I had somehow failed to notice in the gloom. It shot across the patio like a drunken skateboarder, scattering recycling across the rosemary bushes. My partner just stood there, arms folded, wearing that particular expression that says "I will be bringing this up for approximately the next fifteen years." We were off to a cracking start. But here's the thing about Prado Negro. You arrive frazzled, slightly embarrassed, possibly littering the herb garden with empty water bottles. Then morning comes. I pulled back the shutters the next day and actually laughed out loud. The place sits in proper countryside, all rolling hills and almond groves, with a terrace that practically demands you do absolutely nothing on it. The pool glinted like a promise. Somewhere in the distance, a dog barked lazily. Even the wildlife seemed to be taking it easy. We did venture out, of course. The village of Gebas is barely a stroll away, perched on its rocky outcrop like something from a postcard. We wandered up for coffee one morning, moving at what I can only describe as geological pace. The cafe owner seemed entirely unbothered by our slowness. In fact, he appeared to approve. Murcia does not reward rushing. We bought bread from a shop that still has its original ceiling fan, then sat on a wall eating pastries and watching a man water three pot plants with the dedication of a curator tending priceless art. The rest of our days fell into a rhythm so gentle it barely qualified as a rhythm. Morning swim, then breakfast on the terrace with oranges that actually taste of something. A book, inevitably. I had packed three and finished none, which felt like the truest holiday achievement possible. The sun moved across the sky, and we moved with it, shifting our loungers like very lazy sundials. Sometimes I would walk to the edge of the property and just stand there, listening to bees and the occasional distant tractor. That was the activity. Standing and listening. It was marvellous. We did manage the local reservoir one afternoon, Embalse de la Rambla de Algeciras, though "managed" suggests more effort than was involved. We drove ten minutes, found a spot under some pines, and promptly fell asleep. The water was the colour of weak tea and completely perfect for a paddle. A local family were doing much the same, intergenerational lounging in full effect. Nobody was achieving anything, and everybody seemed delighted about it. By the end of the week, I understood something I had forgotten. The bin incident stopped being embarrassing and became funny, even to me. The book remained unfinished, and that was fine. We had eaten simple food, moved slowly, and let the heat slow our thoughts to match our pace. Prado Negro does not ask you to be impressive. It offers sunshine, quiet, and the radical permission to simply be present. I left slightly browner, significantly calmer, and with a newfound respect for wheelie bins and their right to personal space. |
