I should have known the sat nav was up to no good the moment it tried to send us through what looked like someone's allotment. When I finally located the correct box and the door swung open, the cool darkness inside felt like a personal reward. The children bolted past me, shouting about who would claim which bedroom, and I stood there in the tiled hallway, breathing in that particular smell of clean linen and distant sea air that only holiday cottages seem to possess.

The living room opened through French windows onto a terrace with a small private pool, which immediately rendered me the most popular father in Europe. My son was already testing the water with his hand, announcing it "acceptable, actually," which is high praise from a twelve-year-old. The kitchen was compact but sensibly arranged, with a proper coffee maker that I noted with the seriousness of a man who had been surviving on airport cappuccinos since dawn. My wife disappeared to investigate the bedrooms and returned with the satisfied expression that means adequate wardrobe space and decent pillows. These are the victories that matter when you have been married fifteen years.

What struck me most, once the initial chaos subsided, was the quiet. Not silence exactly - there were birds, distant voices, the occasional scooter - but a settled, unhurried quiet that made my shoulders drop about three inches. Los Urrutias sits in a small coastal development between the Mar Menor and the Mediterranean, and the whole place moves to a different rhythm than the frantic energy of bigger resorts. I found myself standing at the kitchen window with a cup of that proper coffee, watching a neighbour hang washing on her line with the unhurried precision of someone who has absolutely nowhere else to be. I envied her profoundly.

By late afternoon we had established our pattern. The children in and out of the pool, my wife unpacking with the methodical calm that eludes me entirely, me attempting to assemble a supermarket barbecue on the terrace with instructions in three languages, none of which I speak with any competence. The meat was slightly charred, the salad was entirely shop-bought, and we ate at a plastic table as the sun went down behind the roofline. My daughter announced that this was "actually quite nice," and I understood that we had achieved something. Not perfection, which is exhausting, but something better. A temporary home where the small mishaps - the wrong track, the electricity meter, my dubious grilling - became part of the story rather than disasters.

I fell asleep that night to the sound of my son's contented snoring from the next room and the faint whisper of the pool filter, already wondering how many days we had left and already knowing I would waste none of them rushing anywhere.
