About Majorca
I have never been so happy to see a sat nav give up on me as I was driving into Llucmajor. There we were, my partner and I, crawling along a dusty track that seemed to get narrower with every metre, convinced we were about to become a cautionary tale about tourists who trusted technology in rural Majorca. The villa directions had seemed straightforward enough back in rainy Manchester, but somewhere between the MA-19 and what I can only describe as "olive grove number forty-seven," our little hire car and I had reached an understanding: we were both out of our depth.

The funny thing, the bit that still makes me wince, was the moment I confidently reversed into what I thought was a helpful passing place. It was, in fact, a drainage ditch disguised by enthusiastic bougainvillea. The gentle crunch of bumper meeting Spanish infrastructure echoed across the valley. My partner's expression suggested this would be mentioned at future dinner parties for years to come. A lovely local man on a scooter eventually guided us the final stretch, gesturing with the weary patience of someone who had rescued lost Britons before.

Then Villa Florentina appeared, and honestly, the ditch felt worth it.

The place sits in that golden pocket of countryside where the land starts thinking about becoming coast but has not quite committed. Terracotta roofs, white walls blinding in the afternoon sun, and a pool that winked at us like it knew we needed it. I stood there with my dusty sandals and my dented pride, already forgetting the journey. The air smelled of pine and something herbal I could not name, warm and thick and utterly foreign to anyone used to Manchester's permanent suggestion of drizzle.

We had arrived with grand walking plans, of course. The Cap Blanc coastline was calling, those dramatic limestone paths where the Mediterranean crashes about forty metres below your feet and you feel properly alive. I had packed my serious walking boots, my breathable socks, my attitude of rugged capability. The weather, however, had other ideas.

The first morning dawned at what felt like blood temperature. By nine o'clock the terrace tiles were too hot for bare feet. I made it approximately two hundred metres up the coastal track before admitting that my British conception of "warm weather" was laughably inadequate. My serious boots became comedy items, like wearing a dinner jacket to the beach. We retreated to the villa's shaded garden with the embarrassed speed of people who had overestimated themselves dramatically.

That became the rhythm of the week. Early starts, when the light was soft and the air still carried night coolness, we'd manage proper stretches of the cliff paths. The views were absurd, genuinely unfair to other coastlines. Turquoise water, those sculpted rocks, the occasional brave fisherman perched on impossible ledges. By midday though, the sun won absolutely. We learned to plan around it, to treat the heat as a feature rather than an obstacle.

The villa's position proved perfect for this adjusted approach. Mornings for walking, afternoons for pool-based recovery and reading books we would never finish at home. Evenings for slow wanderings into Llucmajor itself, for tapas that appeared without us ordering, for wine that seemed to refill itself.

I kept those walking boots by the door as a kind of humorous reminder. Plans change, especially when the weather has personality. There is something gently humbling about being outsmarted by sunshine, about discovering that your prepared self is less useful than your adaptable self. The ditch, the heat, the abandoned ambitious routes - they became the actual holiday, better than the one I had scripted.

We left the boots behind for the next guests, a small inheritance of optimism. I hope they fit someone better, or at least someone who checks passing places more carefully than I did.
