The very well-kept outdoor area invites you to enjoy a carefree day. You can do this, for example, by sitting under the airy sun canopy in the beach/barbecue area at the long stone table, your feet in the white sand, sipping a summer cocktail and gazing at the tall palm tree, or relaxing on one of the comfortable loungers by the pool.Chlorine-free water caresses the skin as you refresh yourself in the 11 metre long and 5 metre wide pool with a small waterfall. The adjoining shallow water area with integrated surrounding bench is suitable for both the little ones to splash around and the older holidaymakers to chill out. About Majorca
I have never been so happy to see a tumble dryer in my entire life. But I am getting ahead of myself.

The journey to Franka in Manacor had been one of those classic British holiday odysseys. Up at four in the morning, a flight from Gatwick that felt like it was staffed by people who had also been up since four, and then a hire car that smelled powerfully of pine air freshener and regret. My partner Dave had insisted on navigating, which meant thirty minutes of circling Palma while he argued with the sat nav in what he calls his "assertive voice." By the time we finally escaped the city and headed east toward Manacor, I had eaten all my emergency snacks and was eyeing the rental agreement with genuine hunger.

The Mallorcan countryside did its best to soothe me. Almond groves, stone walls that looked older than my entire family tree, and that particular honey coloured light that makes you understand why painters lose their minds over this island. Dave kept pointing at things and saying "rustic" with great satisfaction, as if he had personally arranged the landscape.

We found the turning for the property easily enough, a dusty track that wound between low hills and made our little hire car sound like it was being gently beaten with sticks. Franka sat at the end, a low slung finca style house with cream walls and a terracotta roof that seemed to settle into the earth rather than sit upon it. A covered terrace ran along one side, and I could see a glimpse of pool beyond, blue and impossibly inviting. It looked exactly like the photographs, which in my experience of holiday bookings is roughly as likely as winning the lottery.

The key was in the lockbox as promised. I was feeling quite smug about this, about our competence, about the whole adult endeavour of travelling to a foreign country and collecting keys from metal boxes. I turned the handle with something approaching swagger.

That was when I discovered that the washing machine had been running. More specifically, that it had been running and had somehow flooded the utility area, creating a small but determined lake that I stepped directly into with both feet, sandals and all. The water was warm and soapy and deeply, personally offensive. I stood there, ankle deep in someone else's laundry disaster, while Dave made a noise that he later claimed was concern but which sounded exactly like a seal being tickled.

The thing about mishaps in beautiful places is that they happen in beautiful places. I stood dripping in this lovely house, with its beamed ceilings and terracotta floors, its kitchen that smelled faintly of lemons and wood polish, and I started to laugh. Proper, shoulders shaking laughter. Dave fetched towels. I squelched to the terrace and sat in the afternoon sun, watching swallows dart over the pool while my feet dried and my dignity did not.

The owner, when we rang, was mortified. A previous guest, an apology, a promise to sort it. But honestly, by then I did not much care. The mountains rose behind the house, hazy and purple in the heat. Somewhere in the distance, a dog barked the lazy bark of a dog with nothing urgent to attend to. The pool water moved slightly in a breeze I could not feel.

We unpacked eventually. The bedrooms were simple and cool, white walls and wooden shutters that actually worked. The kitchen had everything we needed, including a coffee maker that Dave immediately declared his best friend. But I kept returning to that terrace, to the view across the valley, to the particular silence of a place that is not truly silent but rather full of small, unconcerned noises.

That evening we walked to the nearest village, barely ten minutes along a lane that smelled of wild fennel and warm dust. We ate bread and tomatoes and fish that had been swimming that morning, probably in a better mood than I had been. We drank wine that cost less than bottled water at home and watched the sky turn that particular Mediterranean pink that makes you forget you ever owned an umbrella.

Back at Franka, the flood was mopped, the machine tamed, my sandals forgiven if not entirely forgotten. I sat by the pool as the stars came out, proper stars, the kind that make you realise how much light pollution you normally endure. Dave brought me a drink and sat beside me, and we did not say much, which felt exactly right.

The tumble dryer, when I found it in the utility room, became my unexpected hero. It hummed away while I stood in my borrowed dry clothes and watched the Mallorcan night settle around this little house that already felt, impossibly, like somewhere I knew. I had arrived sodden and ridiculous, and I could not have been more grateful for it.
