About Ibiza
By the time our flight touched down at Ibiza Airport, I was already running on fumes, a dodgy airport sandwich, and the kind of optimism that only a week off work can provide. The journey from Manchester had been your classic package of screaming toddlers, a chap behind me who treated his seat like a drum kit, and my other half insisting we didn't need to pay for priority boarding because "how bad can it be?" Reader, it was bad. But none of that prepared me for the piece de resistance of our travel day: me, in the arrivals car park, confidently marching up to a silver Renault Captur that was definitely, absolutely, 100 percent not our hire car.

I had the keys in my hand and was about to pop the boot when a very confused German family started gesturing from the cafe. Turns out our actual car was three spaces down, identical colour, completely different number plate. My partner found this hilarious. I found it character-building. Welcome to Ibiza.

The drive to Sant Josep de sa Talaia took about twenty minutes, winding through countryside that already had me forgiving the car park humiliation. The west coast of Ibiza doesn't do subtle entrances. One minute you're on dusty roads passing whitewashed fincas, the next the landscape opens up and you catch glimpses of that impossible blue water between the pines. We rolled down the windows and immediately felt like people in a car advert, except with more luggage and a lingering smell of aeroplane.

Finding Villa Oceana meant navigating increasingly narrow lanes, the kind where you develop an intimate relationship with every hedge and passing place. I was still recovering from my earlier confidence crisis, so naturally I insisted my partner drive the final stretch while I provided "helpful" directions from Google Maps with the approximate accuracy of a broken compass. "Left here," I'd say, pointing right. "Definitely this one," I'd announce, as we passed the actual turning.

But then we rounded the final bend and there it was, perched on its hillside with that view that makes you forget every minor indignity of the past twelve hours. The villa sat there looking terribly pleased with itself, all clean lines and terracotta, framed by those classic Ibiza pines and with the Mediterranean glittering beyond like someone had gone overboard with the blue paint.

The key was in a lockbox, which of course I couldn't open on the first three attempts because I was still flustered and reading the code upside down. Fourth time lucky, the door swung open and we stepped into cool tiled space that smelled faintly of jasmine from somewhere outside. I don't know what I expected, but the reality was somehow both grander and more welcoming than the photos suggested. High ceilings, that lovely open-plan living area flowing straight out to the terrace, everything designed around the fact that nobody comes to Ibiza to stare at walls.

I made straight for the terrace doors, nearly tripping over my own flip-flops in the process, and stepped out into that view properly for the first time. The pool shimmered in front of us, infinity edge giving way to hills rolling down towards the sea. Cala Tarida was visible in the distance, that distinctive curve of beach, and beyond it nothing but open water fading through shades of turquoise into deeper blue. Somewhere out there, boats were probably doing expensive things, but from our hillside perch everything felt deliciously still.

My partner appeared with two glasses of the supermarket cava we'd wisely purchased, still cold from the boot. We stood there like a pair of idiots, grinning at each other, watching the late afternoon light start to turn golden across the landscape. The mishaps of the journey, the wrong car, my questionable navigation, the lockbox fiasco - none of it mattered anymore. That's the thing about arriving somewhere properly lovely, isn't it? It doesn't erase the chaos that got you there, but it gives it context, turns it into the setup for the punchline.

I remember thinking, as I finally let myself relax into that first evening, that this was exactly why we do it. Why we pack ourselves into metal tubes and hurtle across skies, why we navigate foreign roads and make fools of ourselves in car parks. For this moment, this particular stillness, this view that no amount of scrolling through holiday photos can properly prepare you for.

The sun began dropping towards the horizon, painting everything in that warm Mediterranean glow that makes even the most ordinary photographer feel like a genius. Somewhere below us, a dog barked. A scooter puttered along a distant road. Otherwise, silence, and the faint promise of cicadas warming up for their evening shift.

We didn't even bother with dinner plans. Sat by that pool as darkness crept in and the first stars appeared, too content to move, too happy to care about anything beyond the next glass and the slow realisation that we had seven whole days of this ahead of us. The journey had been thoroughly human, full of small failures and recoveries. But the arrival? The arrival was absolutely perfect.
