The thing about booking a villa in Ibiza is that you convince yourself you'll become a completely different person. I was absolutely certain that within hours of landing, I'd be one of those people who does sunrise yoga and drinks green juice before 8am. What actually happened was that I spent the first twenty minutes at Villa Davros trying to work out why my suitcase contained twelve pairs of pants and no sun cream, then promptly locked myself out on the terrace while attempting to locate the pool.

I'd like to say this happened because I was overwhelmed by the view. The truth is I was holding a glass of wine, my phone, and the villa's welcome folder simultaneously, and the sliding door has a temperament. One moment I was admiring the hills rolling down towards Santa Eulalia, the next I was performing a sort of desperate tap dance in flip-flops, waving at a gecko like it might possess a spare key.

The gecko was not forthcoming.

Eventually I managed to attract attention by throwing a cushion at the kitchen window, which my partner found hilarious for approximately four seconds before realising I had also stranded his swimming shorts. We were reunited with indoor living roughly twenty minutes later, by which point I'd finished my wine, acquired an impressive terrace tan on one arm, and decided that perhaps this holiday wasn't about transformation after all. Perhaps it was about accepting that I am someone who locks herself out of beautiful properties and that this is simply part of my charm.

Villa Davros sits in that perfect pocket of Ibiza where you feel wonderfully removed without being inconvenient. Santa Eulalia's promenade is close enough for an evening wander, though most days I barely made it past the pool. The villa has that particular stillness that makes reading feel like an event rather than a pastime. I brought three books and finished two, which might not sound remarkable until you understand that at home I have been "reading" the same novel since 2019.

Mornings became a slow ritual. Coffee on the terrace, watching the light change over the countryside, occasionally bothering to move to a different lounger for variety. The pool demanded nothing more than floating and occasional splashing. I am not someone who typically floats with commitment, but something about that water, that warmth, turned me into a devoted aquatic layabout.

We did venture to the local beach a handful of times, though I use "venture" loosely. It was ten minutes by car, which felt almost strenuous. Santa Eulalia itself rewarded minimal effort with proper Spanish breakfasts and ice cream that justified multiple visits to the same cafe. I became embarrassingly loyal to one particular spot, ordering the same cortado each morning until the waiter simply raised an eyebrow in acknowledgment.

What struck me most was how quickly doing very little became deeply satisfying. Not the performative relaxation of meditation apps and wellness retreats, but genuine, unapologetic laziness. Hours passed with no achievement beyond finishing a chapter or deciding whether to swim before or after lunch. The villa's quiet setting made this feel natural rather than indulgent, though I suppose it was both.

By the final day, I'd abandoned any pretence of becoming a morning person or learning Spanish beyond "mas vino, por favor." I locked myself out precisely zero additional times, which felt like sufficient personal growth. Some holidays change your perspective; this one gently reminded me that perspective doesn't always need changing. Sometimes the view from a pool lounger, wine in hand, door safely unlocked, is exactly enough.
