About Catalonia
The property itself, a converted farmhouse near the village, was already promising salvation. Terracotta tiles, wooden beams thick enough to hang a hammock from, and a courtyard that smelled of jasmine and distant barbecue. But it was the people who made that first afternoon unforgettable. My neighbour appeared within the hour, a woman called Montse who must have been seventy and moved like she was twenty-five. She brought me tomatoes from her garden, still warm from the sun, and proceeded to tell me her life story while I stood there holding them like some sort of vegetable-based hostage. Her husband had died twelve years ago, she said, and since then she'd learned to fix the roof, argue with the plumber, and make paella for twenty without breaking a sweat. "Men," she said, with a shrug that contained multitudes. She inspected my car, still dusty from my earlier agricultural adventure, and pronounced it "muy pequeno for such big mistakes." I liked her enormously. The local shopkeeper, Pere, operated what I can only describe as a social club that happened to sell bread. I popped in for milk and emerged forty minutes later with a bottle of Emporda wine, three different cheeses, and a thorough understanding of his opinions on Barcelona football club, Catalan independence, and why British people cannot drive. He had apparently heard about the gate incident from the farmer, whose cousin's wife's brother knew Pere's sister. Information travelled faster than WhatsApp in that village. He insisted on opening the wine there and then, pouring plastic cups for himself, me, and a silent old man in the corner who turned out to be his father. The father spoke no Spanish, only Catalan, and communicated exclusively through meaningful eyebrow movements. I understood about sixty percent of what was happening and enjoyed one hundred percent of it. That evening, as I sat in the courtyard with Montse's tomatoes and Pere's wine, a teenager called Biel appeared over the wall. He was practising English for school, he explained, and had spotted the foreigner. We talked for an hour about music, mostly him correcting my pronunciation of Catalan band names and me failing to explain why British people say "cheers" for everything. He wanted to know if I'd seen London. I said yes. He wanted to know if I'd seen a Premier League match. I said no. He looked at me with genuine confusion, as if I'd admitted to never having seen the sea. What struck me, that first day, was how immediately I'd been absorbed into something. Not as a tourist, exactly, but as a minor character in an ongoing story everyone else already knew by heart. There was no performance to it, no rehearsed hospitality. Just curiosity, gentle mockery, and the kind of directness that makes you examine yourself slightly. I'd arrived expecting solitude and a swimming pool. Instead I got a community that operated on its own terms, that found me amusing without being unkind, and that seemed genuinely pleased I'd made such a spectacular mess of my entrance. I finished the wine. The father raised his eyebrows at me, which I chose to interpret as approval. The sheep, I suspected, were still talking about me. And I already knew, with absolute certainty, that this was going to be a very good holiday indeed. |
