About Andalusia
I'd never heard of Puente Genil before booking this place, which probably tells you everything about my holiday planning strategy: find somewhere with a pool, check the weather forecast, cross fingers. The drive from Malaga airport took the best part of two hours, winding through olive groves that stretched to every horizon like someone had gone mad with a giant tin of green paint. My partner Dave navigated while I attempted Spanish phrases from an app I'd downloaded that morning. "Estamos perdidos," I announced confidently, about ten minutes before we actually became lost.

The mishap happened at a roundabout somewhere near Antequera. I'd been in charge of snacks, you see, and had balanced an open bag of chorizo crisps on my lap like the absolute amateur I am. One enthusiastic gear change from Dave and the entire contents launched themselves across the dashboard, into the air vents, down the seat crevices, and somehow into the cup holder. We smelled like a tapas bar for the rest of the journey. Dave kept finding orange dust in unexpected places for days. I am, and I say this with some pride, a complete liability.

By the time we spotted the sign for Puente Genil, I'd developed that particular tension that comes from too much motorway, too little legroom, and the creeping suspicion that holiday cottages always look better in photos. We turned down a lane between whitewashed houses, past someone watering geraniums with the focused attention of a brain surgeon, and then there it was: a proper Andalusian cortijo with terracotta pots flanking the entrance and a bougainvillea doing its absolute best to take over the entire front wall.

The key was in a lockbox, which I fumbled with for several minutes while Dave made helpful suggestions from a safe distance. When the door finally yielded, we stepped into a cool hallway with tiled floors that felt delicious against my travel-swollen feet. The kitchen opened to one side, all wooden beams and a proper gas hob that immediately made me want to cook something ambitious involving garlic. But it was the back door that did me in. I pushed through and just stood there like a fool.

The pool caught the afternoon light in that particular way that makes you forget every motorway frustration. Beyond it, the garden dropped away toward olive trees and distant hills, nothing but birdsong and the faint clicking of a neighbour's sprinkler. Dave appeared beside me with two beers he'd found in the fridge, already sweating in the warmth. We didn't speak for a while, which for us is practically a miracle.

I keep thinking about that first hour. The way the light changed across the terrace as we unpacked. The discovery that the outdoor shower actually had proper hot water. The village church bell marking some hour I couldn't identify. I'd worried about booking somewhere unknown, somewhere without reviews from people I know, somewhere that might disappoint. Instead I found that rare thing: a place that immediately felt like somewhere you could exhale.

The crisps remained in the hire car crevices, a small orange reminder that the best arrivals usually follow some small chaos.
