About Andalusia
I have never been so grateful for air conditioning in my entire life. We had been driving from Malaga Airport for what felt like approximately fourteen years, though the hire car clock insisted it was only ninety minutes. The A-7 was straightforward enough, but the final stretch up to Gaucin from the coast road is essentially a collection of hairpin bends designed by someone who fundamentally distrusts the concept of straight lines. My partner was navigating, which in our relationship means holding the phone at an unhelpful angle and saying "I think it's soon" at irregular intervals.

The mishap, because there is always a mishap, arrived precisely as we did. I had been smug about packing light. One bag each, I had announced, we are minimalist travellers now. What I had failed to pack, in my minimalist wisdom, was any awareness of what August in Andalusia actually means. We pulled up to the cortijo, stepped out of our air-conditioned bubble, and I immediately tried to get back into the car through a closed window. The heat was not merely hot. It was theatrical. It was personal. It was the kind of heat that makes you reconsider every life choice that led you to book a holiday in southern Spain during the month when sensible locals traditionally flee to cooler northern coasts.

The property itself, when we eventually managed to open the door while clinging to any available shade, revealed itself in layers. First, the relief of tiled floors and thick walls that have clearly spent centuries learning how to keep heat outside where it belongs. Then, gradually, the details. A kitchen that opened onto a terrace with views across the Serrania de Ronda that genuinely made me stop mid-complaint about the temperature. The pool, which we had both assumed would be a pleasant amenity, instantly became the absolute centre of our existence. I am not exaggerating when I say we calculated our day around when the sun would hit the water at the optimal angle for maximum cooling potential.

August in Gaucin, we quickly discovered, operates on an entirely different rhythm to anything I understood. The village itself essentially shuts down between two and six in the afternoon. Not in a tourist-brochure way, in a genuine "we are not mad enough to be outside" way. The first afternoon, we attempted a walk to explore. We made it approximately two hundred metres before retreating to the nearest bar, which turned out to be excellent preparation because we spent the next three hours drinking tinto de verano and accepting that we were not going to achieve anything productive until the sun lowered its ambitions.

What struck me, once I stopped fighting the season, was how completely the heat shapes everything. Dinner happens at ten o'clock because that is when the terrace becomes bearable. Conversations with neighbours happen at the communal washing stone in the cool of early morning, when the older women of the village gather before the day asserts itself. Even the swifts, which wheel overhead in extraordinary numbers, seem to schedule their most frantic activity for the edges of the day.

By our third evening, we had adapted into something approaching local time. We rose early, achieved any necessary movement before nine, then surrendered to the pool and shade until the light began to soften. The golden hour here, in late summer, lasts longer than anywhere I have experienced. The hills turn colours that seem almost aggressive in their beauty, and the heat finally relents into something you can wear like a comfortable blanket rather than fight like an assailant.

I had arrived thinking of the heat as an obstacle to be overcome. I left understanding it as the entire point. The season does not merely influence a stay in Gaucin; it is the architecture within which everything else happens. You either build your days around it, or it will happily demonstrate your foolishness. I built around it. I am still, if I am honest, slightly embarrassed by how long that took me to figure out.
