About Savinjska
I have never been brilliant with directions, which is how I ended up driving three times round the same roundabout just outside Celje, convinced my sat nav had developed a personal vendetta against me. The journey from Ljubljana Airport had been straightforward enough, all sweeping valleys and the occasional church spire poking through the mist, but the final stretch into Savinjska tested what little patience I had left after a dawn flight and a coffee that tasted like airport regret.

The property sat at the end of a narrow lane, half-hidden by trees that were just beginning to turn. I spotted the wooden sign, breathed a sigh of relief, and promptly reversed into a hedge. Nothing dramatic, just a gentle crunch of twigs and a moment of silent swearing while I checked whether anyone had witnessed my arrival. They had not, unless you count a very judgmental-looking cat on a nearby wall.

Stepping out of the car, the first thing that struck me was the quiet. Not the oppressive, heavy silence of cities, but a living sort of stillness, broken by a stream somewhere below and the distant clank of what I later learned was a neighbour moving sheep. The house itself was modest and unassuming, the sort of place that does not shout for attention but rather settles comfortably into its surroundings. Wooden balconies, flower boxes still clinging to late blooms, and that particular smell of mountain air mixed with woodsmoke that makes you feel you have arrived somewhere that matters.

I fumbled with the key box, dropping the code paper twice, before the door finally swung open. The interior was warmer than I expected, all timber beams and simple, solid furniture that spoke of practicality rather than pretension. The kitchen looked immediately inviting, not because it was grand but because it was clearly used, with proper knives and a stove that promised actual cooking rather than the sad microwave meals I had been surviving on back home. I found myself already planning a trip to the local shops, imagining bags of fresh produce and perhaps a bottle of something local to celebrate my survival of both the journey and the hedge incident.

The balcony became my first proper victory. I dragged out a chair, still wearing my travelling clothes and that particular dishevelment that comes from hours in a hire car, and simply sat. The valley fell away below, patchwork fields giving way to wooded slopes, and somewhere in the middle distance I could just make out the faint outline of what I assumed was Mozirje. I had done nothing yet, achieved nothing by any measurable standard, and yet I felt an unfamiliar loosening in my chest, the particular pleasure of being precisely where you are supposed to be, even if you took the scenic route to get there.

That evening I walked the immediate lanes, nodding at locals who seemed unsurprised by a wandering Englishman in inadequate shoes. I returned with dusty boots, a small bag of apples from a honesty stall, and the growing realisation that my talent for getting lost might actually be an asset in a place where the point is not the destination but the slow, meandering process of finding it.
