About Podravska
By the time I pulled up at the property, I was in that peculiar state of mild hysteria where everything becomes funny. The key safe code, which had seemed perfectly logical in the booking email, suddenly required the kind of mental arithmetic I had not attempted since GCSE. I stood there, jabbing numbers, convinced I had been scammed or had simply imagined the entire holiday. Then the lock clicked, the door swung open, and I stepped into possibly the most peaceful space I have ever encountered. The first thing that struck me was the light. The cabin sits in that sweet spot where the morning sun pours through the windows but the afternoon heat does not turn the place into a greenhouse. I dumped my bag in the corner, made the kind of cup of tea that tastes better for being slightly wrong, and collapsed onto the terrace with absolutely no intention of moving for several hours. This, I decided, was the entire point of being here. I had brought three books, which now seems like excessive optimism given that I spent most of the first afternoon just watching a woodpecker attempt something ambitious on a nearby tree. The terrace became my headquarters. I would shift from chair to lounger to the little wooden bench, always following the shade like some kind of sun-avoidance strategist. The locals probably have a word for this kind of behaviour. I hope it is not rude. The property sits in the Pohorje hills, and the immediate surroundings are exactly what you want from a Slovenian escape. There are walking paths that start practically from the doorstep, winding through forests that smell properly of pine and damp earth. I did attempt one on the second morning, telling myself that gentle exercise would justify the afternoon of complete inactivity. I walked for perhaps forty minutes, saw precisely no other humans, heard nothing but birds and my own slightly laboured breathing, and returned feeling so virtuous that I napped for two hours. What I loved, and what I had not properly anticipated, was how quickly the urge to do things evaporated. At home I am always constructing lists, filling weekends, feeling vaguely guilty about unproductive time. Here, productivity became redefined as successfully finishing a chapter, or locating the optimal angle for reading without glare, or remembering to bring out the cheese before it got too warm. These were achievements. These were enough. The small supermarket in the nearest village, maybe ten minutes by car, supplied everything needed for simple meals. I cooked outside on the grill one evening, slightly burning the peppers in a way that felt authentic rather than incompetent, and ate at the wooden table as the light faded. There was no pressure to go anywhere, to see anything, to tick boxes. The hills were right there. They would still be there tomorrow. They would probably be there next year. I think the cow would be pleased to know I learned my lesson about following directions. But I am almost grateful for the detour, for the way it made the stillness feel earned. Some holidays you come back from needing another holiday. This one, I suspect, will stay with me longer than that. |
