About Goriska
We eventually found the proper road, and with it, the actual Col. The property sits in Goriska, a region of Slovenia that seems to have been designed by someone who really understood the appeal of doing absolutely nothing in beautiful surroundings. The house itself is one of those solid, unhurried buildings that immediately suggests it has seen several generations of families arrive frazzled and leave slightly less broken. Terracotta roof, wooden shutters, a garden that has clearly made its own decisions about landscaping. I loved it before we even opened the car doors. The first thing you notice, once you stop apologising to your partner and start paying attention, is the light. It falls differently here, somehow slower, as if even the sun has decided to take its time. We dumped our bags in the hallway with the casual disrespect of people who have no intention of moving quickly for the next week. The interior was exactly right: not trying too hard, comfortable furniture you actually want to sit in, a kitchen that suggested cooking might happen eventually but certainly not today. I found a hammock in the garden and made a mental note to spend approximately sixty percent of my waking hours in it. That first afternoon set the pattern for everything that followed. We walked perhaps ten minutes to the nearest village, just to establish that we could, then immediately returned to do nothing more strenuous than locate the wine opener. I had brought three books and finished none of them, which I consider the mark of a genuinely successful holiday. There is a particular pleasure in reading the same paragraph four times because you keep looking up at the mountains, or a passing butterfly, or simply the satisfying nothing of being still. The garden became our entire world. Mornings with coffee that went cold because we forgot to drink it. Afternoons lying on the grass watching clouds perform their slow, indifferent theatre. Evenings with the kind of sunset that makes you feel slightly smug about your life choices. We did walk to the local shop once, a charmingly understaffed affair where I attempted to buy cheese using approximately seven words of Slovenian and a great deal of hopeful pointing. We came back with cheese, some mysterious sausage, and what I believe were pickled vegetables, though they might have been a dare. There is something gently humbling about a holiday built around deliberate inactivity. I am usually a person who measures days by achievement, who feels vaguely criminal sitting still for more than twenty minutes. Col wore that anxiety down until it seemed faintly ridiculous, like worrying about your hair in a swimming pool. The world did not end because I read half a chapter and napped. Nothing collapsed because we chose the hammock over a hike. The mountains stayed where they were. The goat, presumably, found someone else to judge. On our final morning, I woke early and sat outside with that cold coffee habit, watching mist lift off the hills like someone slowly pulling back a duvet. I thought about our wrong turn, the goat, the mysterious pickled vegetables. I thought about how rarely I allow myself this version of time, stretched and unaccountable. Then I stopped thinking altogether, which was rather the point. |
