About Coast And Karst
I have never been so pleased to see a toilet in my entire life.

Fourteen hours after leaving Stansted, there I was, rattling down the final stretch of Slovenian coast road in a hire car that smelled aggressively of pine air freshener, absolutely desperate for a wee. The mishap, if you can call it that, was entirely my own doing. Somewhere past Ljubljana I had knocked over my water bottle, soaked my lap, and spent the next two hours convinced fellow motorists thought I had already had the accident I was so frantically trying to prevent. By the time Piran's ancient walls hove into view, I was doing a seated dance that would have embarrassed my teenage self at a concert.

The property sat tucked into the labyrinth of Piran's old town, a honey-stoned house with green shutters that looked like it had been there since someone first thought "this peninsula seems nice." I abandoned the car in the nearest parking spot with the enthusiasm of a man fleeing a burning building, grabbed my bag, and waddled through narrow streets that smelled of drying laundry and someone else's excellent lunch. The key was exactly where promised, hidden in a lockbox that required three attempts because my hands had developed a tremor.

Then the door opened, and something in my chest unclenched.

The flat was simple, proper simple, not Instagram simple. Wooden floors that creaked in friendly greeting. A kitchen corner with a kettle that looked like it had boiled water for a thousand cups of coffee. White walls, blue cushions, that particular stillness of a place that has absorbed centuries of human coming and going. I located the bathroom with the precision of a homing pigeon, emerged ten minutes later feeling practically reborn, and only then did I truly look around.

The window in the main room framed a slice of Tartini Square that made me laugh out loud. There was the violinist statue, there the pastel facades, there a man walking three dogs who appeared to be walking him. I had seen photographs, of course, but photographs lie by freezing things. Real Piran breathed. Somewhere below, a scooter puttered past. A woman's voice rose in what sounded like cheerful complaint. Church bells did that thing where they seem to come from everywhere at once.

I made terrible coffee with the provided machine, spilling grounds across the counter because I still had motorway hands. Sat on the little balcony that overlooked a courtyard where someone grew tomatoes in pots. The afternoon sun hit the stone buildings at that angle that makes everything look like a painting you are slightly too lucky to be inside. A cat regarded me from a neighbouring windowsill with the frank assessment cats reserve for strangers in their territory.

What struck me, really struck me, was the silence beneath the sounds. No traffic hum, not here in the pedestrian heart. No distant motorway drone. Just the particular quiet of a walled town surrounded by sea, where sound behaves differently, where voices carry and footsteps echo and you become suddenly aware of your own presence in a space that has known so many others.

I thought about the journey, the wet lap, the desperate final miles. About how I nearly cancelled this trip twice, about the emails I had not answered, about the general accumulated clutter of a life that had felt increasingly like trying to pack a suitcase that would not close. Standing on that balcony with my dreadful coffee, I felt something loosen. Not solved. Not fixed. Just loosened.

That evening I walked to the waterfront without purpose, watched the sun lower itself into the Adriatic with theatrical slowness, ate fried sardines at a restaurant where the waiter pretended not to notice I had dressed from a crumpled bag. Returned to the flat as darkness made the stone streets mysterious and slightly treacherous, stubbed my toe on the third step up, and laughed properly for the first time in weeks.

The mishap had been small, ridiculous, entirely mine. The recovery, though, that felt like something given.
