About Warsaw
The sat nav had been insisting for the last twenty minutes that we were "approaching destination," which was impressive given that we were currently crawling past a field of very unimpressed-looking goats somewhere north of Warsaw. My partner Dave, who had confidently claimed he "didn't need to write down the full address," was now squinting at his phone like it had personally betrayed him. Turns out there's a difference between Serock and, well, wherever we actually were. The goats, I felt, judged us silently.

We eventually found the holiday home thanks to a very patient local chap who spoke excellent English and seemed genuinely amused by two Brits looking lost in his village. The place sat tucked along a quiet lane, modest and welcoming with its wooden veranda and that particular stillness you only get when you're properly out in the Polish countryside. I stepped out of the car, stretched my legs, and promptly tripped over the welcome mat. Dave didn't even laugh. He just handed me my suitcase and said, "At least we're consistent."

The first morning, I woke to sunlight pouring through thin curtains and the distant sound of someone chopping wood. No alarm. No traffic. Just warmth and quiet. We made terrible coffee in the little kitchen, spilling grounds everywhere because apparently neither of us can operate a basic filter machine under pressure. We took our mugs outside to the veranda, still in pyjamas at half ten, and did absolutely nothing for two solid hours. A red squirrel darted across the garden fence. Dave dozed off in his chair. I read three pages of a novel, got distracted by a cloud shaped like a duck, and decided that counted as sufficient literary engagement for the day.

That became the rhythm of it. Lazy breakfasts that stretched toward lunch. Wandering down to the nearby riverbank with no particular purpose, just watching the water move. The village of Serock itself rewarded this approach perfectly - a slow stroll to a bakery for fresh bulki, sitting on a bench near the market square with nowhere pressing to be. We found a tiny pier where local lads were fishing, their lines motionless in the water, and understood immediately that this was the pace we were meant to keep.

I had packed running shoes with genuine intention. They stayed in the suitcase, and I felt no guilt whatsoever. There is something quietly revolutionary about giving yourself permission to simply exist in sunshine. To notice how afternoon light falls across wooden table boards. To finish a chapter, set the book down, and stare at nothing in particular until your thoughts settle like sediment in a jar.

One evening, Dave actually said, "I think I've forgotten what day it is," and we both agreed this was the highest possible achievement of the holiday. We walked to a nearby bar for cold Tyskie beer, watching the sky turn soft orange over the treeline. No monuments, no must-see attractions, no ticking boxes. Just the gentle pleasure of being somewhere else, moving slowly through it.

On our final morning, I sat on that veranda again with my questionable coffee. The same squirrel appeared, possibly mocking me. I thought about the goats who had witnessed our arrival, the welcome mat that had defeated me, the novel I'd only half-finished because looking up had consistently seemed the better option. Some holidays are about seeing everything. This one, beautifully, had been about seeing very little and feeling it completely.
