About Tatra
Right, so picture this: four hours into our drive from Krakow, my phone dies, the sat nav packs up, and I confidently announce to the kids that I "know exactly where we are." Reader, I did not. We ended up circling the same pine-forested lane three times before spotting a handwritten sign for Zakopane Koscielisko that looked like it had been nailed up sometime in the 1980s. My wife gave me that look. You know the one.

We finally rolled up to the property as the afternoon light was doing that golden thing across the Tatra peaks. And honestly? The chaos of getting there melted away pretty sharpish. The cottage sits in Koscielisko, which is technically part of Zakopane but feels worlds away from the main strip's hustle. No hen parties, no blokes selling wooden trumpets on every corner. Just quiet. Birds. The occasional distant clank of someone's cowbell.

First thing that struck me was the smell. Not the damp-cottage pong I'd braced myself for, but proper woodsmoke and pine resin. The place is done out in that classic highland style - lots of timber, patterned textiles, a stove that looks like it could heat a small village. My daughter immediately claimed the loft bedroom, which meant my son had to bunk in with us. Cue twenty minutes of dramatic sighing that would have impressed a Shakespearean actor.

The kitchen became our headquarters within about six minutes. Not because we were cooking anything fancy - we'd brought the usual disaster supplies of pasta, jarred sauce, and something claiming to be Polish ham - but because it had these enormous windows overlooking the garden and the hills beyond. You find yourself just standing there, tea going cold in your hand, watching the light shift across the slopes. Very zen, until someone asks where the bottle opener is for the third time.

We did venture out that first evening, shuffling down to a little local shop for milk and whatever else we could identify. My Polish extends to "dziekuje" and "piwo," which made for an interesting transaction involving a lot of pointing and apologetic smiling. The woman behind the counter seemed genuinely delighted by our incompetence, which I choose to believe was charming rather than pitiful.

Back at the cottage, we discovered the fireplace actually works, which in my experience of rental properties is about a fifty-fifty proposition. The kids roasted marshmallows on sticks that were definitely too green and produced spectacular amounts of smoke. My wife opened wine. I attempted to play a card game whose rules nobody had actually read. It was perfect in its slightly chaotic way.

What I keep thinking about, though, is that moment the first morning when I woke before everyone else. Made coffee in that kitchen, stepped out onto the little terrace in my ridiculous slippers, and just listened. Nothing but wind in the trees and somewhere, miles off, what I later learned was probably the cable car up to Kasprowy Wierch starting its day. No emails. No school run. Just me, a mug of something hot, and mountains that have been there since before anyone thought to build a cottage beneath them.

I stood there feeling genuinely grateful for getting lost on the way in. Sometimes the wrong turn gets you somewhere worth being.
