About Pomerania
The thing about driving to Nowe Warpno is that you genuinely cannot rely on technology to understand rural Poland. I'd been smug about my preparation - printed directions, offline maps, even a compass app that I'd used precisely once before abandoning it. Yet somehow I'd still managed to miss the proper turning and end up chatting with a very patient farmer who spoke no English and, as it turned out, directed me entirely through interpretive pointing and a series of encouraging nods. By the time I found the actual property, I was three hours late, slightly hysterical, and in desperate need of whatever the Polish equivalent of a cuppa might be. The house sat tucked among pine trees near the Szczecin Lagoon, looking improbably charming for something I'd found on a website at half past midnight during a particularly bleak February. Wooden exterior, proper Scandinavian-meets-Pomeranian vibe, and a deck that practically begged for a gin and tonic. I stood there with my car full of snacks and misplaced optimism, suddenly aware that I'd been wearing the same jumper for fourteen hours and probably smelled like a motorway services. The key was exactly where the owner said it would be - a small lockbox that I fumbled with for an embarrassingly long time, dropping it twice and whispering apologies to absolutely no one. There's something uniquely humbling about failing to operate a four-digit code when you're exhausted. I kept trying variations of the number they'd sent, somehow convincing myself I'd misremembered it, before realising I was simply holding it upside down. Classic. Stepping inside, the smell of pine and something faintly citrusy hit me immediately. The place was warmer than expected, someone having clearly sorted the heating in anticipation, and I felt that particular relief of a holiday actually matching its photographs. Open-plan living space with a kitchen that looked genuinely usable rather than the usual holiday let fiction. Big windows facing the water, though by now it was properly dark and I could only see my own tired reflection staring back, looking slightly mad. I made the rookie error of exploring before unpacking, which meant doing the full tour with a carrier bag still hooked on my arm like some strange accessory. Two bedrooms upstairs, both with that satisfying creak of proper wooden floors. A bathroom with an actual bath, not just the shower I'd mentally prepared for. The kind of details you don't properly appreciate until you've stayed in enough places where "character" is estate agent code for "the boiler makes a noise like a dying whale." Standing on that deck later, finally holding a very basic tea made with milk I'd remembered to bring because apparently Polish shops were closed by the time I'd arrived, I laughed at myself properly for the first time that day. The whole daft journey, the cabbage field detour, the lockbox incompetence - it all felt worthwhile rather than merely endured. Somewhere out there was the lagoon, invisible but present, and somewhere beyond that the Baltic proper. I'd made it, eventually, to a corner of Poland I couldn't have pointed to on a map six months prior. The night was completely silent except for pine needles shifting somewhere above me. No traffic, no planes, nothing except my own breathing and the faint realisation that I'd absolutely do the whole ridiculous journey again. Though perhaps with a better sat nav, and definitely with more snacks. |
