About Pomerania
So there we were, circling what I now believe was the same junction three times, me pretending I knew exactly where I was going, until a very patient local in a tiny Fiat waved us down and pointed us toward the lake with hand gestures that transcended language. Turns out the property was down a lane so picturesque it felt almost aggressive about it. Tall pines, dappled light, the works. I half expected a Disney bird to land on the bonnet. The cottage itself sat near the Szczecin Lagoon, and my first thought was how gloriously unpretentious it all felt. Not a boutique hotel masquerading as rustic, but actual rustic. Wooden cladding that had seen some weather. A garden that looked like someone had made a genuine effort with flowers but then sensibly given up and let nature do its thing. The kids bolted straight past me to investigate a rope swing hanging from an ancient tree, and I heard my daughter shriek with that particular joy that makes the whole journey worthwhile. Inside, the place had that proper holiday-home smell. You know the one. Slightly woody, slightly like someone else's very clean airing cupboard. The kitchen was compact in that way that forces you to actually talk to your family while cooking rather than everyone scattering to separate rooms. I immediately pictured myself attempting pancakes with Polish flour, which I can tell you now will be a comedy of errors I shall save for another time. What struck me most, wandering through with my shoes still on because I had forgotten the rule, was how immediately relaxed I felt. There was no pressure to be anywhere or do anything spectacular. The lagoon was visible through the trees, grey and calm and enormous, and I found myself standing at the window like a character in a film, suddenly aware of how much I had needed to slow down. The mishap with the charger, the circling, the mild marital tension, it all dissolved into something approaching contentment. My wife found the terrace first, of course. She has a radar for outdoor seating. She was already planning our evening with a cup of tea she had somehow produced from nowhere, watching our son attempt to climb a tree he was definitely not skilled enough for. We did not intervene. Cottage rules, apparently, involve more acceptable risk than suburban parenting typically allows. By the time I had unloaded the car, badly, leaving a bag of crisps to be crushed under a suitcase, the light was doing that golden evening thing that Pomerania seems to specialise in. Someone nearby was having a barbecue. The smell drifted over. I decided immediately that we would do the same tomorrow, though I knew full well I would burn everything and claim it was meant to be charred. That first evening, we walked down to the water's edge as the sun dropped. The lagoon stretched out, flat and mysterious, with the distant shore barely visible. My daughter asked if we could swim in it, and I said maybe tomorrow without having checked anything practical like temperature or depth. The kids threw stones. My wife took my hand. I thought about how I would definitely remember the charger next time, knowing equally definitely that I would not. We walked back as the mosquitoes began their evening shift, which I took as our cue to retreat inside with board games and that strange Polish lemonade I had bought on a whim. The cottage felt like a place that had hosted a thousand similar evenings. Families slightly chaotic, slightly sunburned, slightly too full of bread. I wanted to do it justice. As I finally found the proper light switch after trying three wrong ones, I caught my reflection in the dark window. Tired, certainly. A bit scruffy from the road. But grinning like an idiot. The mishaps had already become the story, and the story was already becoming the memory. That is the alchemy of a good family break, I think. The wrong charger leading to the right place. The getting lost becoming the thing you laugh about first. I poured myself a small vodka, because when in Pomerania, and settled onto the slightly creaky sofa. My son was already asleep in an armchair, exhausted by tree-climbing and fresh air. My daughter was drawing at the table, tongue out in concentration. My wife raised her cup in a silent toast. Outside, the pines moved in a breeze I could not feel but could hear, and somewhere a dog barked once and thought better of it. I thought about all the holidays we had taken that tried too hard to be perfect. The ones with itineraries and expectations and Instagram moments. This was not that. This was something simpler, something older, something that felt like it had been waiting for us specifically, charger mishaps and all. I finished my drink, switched off the last light, and let the darkness and the quiet do what they do best. Tomorrow we would explore properly. Tonight, we had arrived. And sometimes, I am learning, that is absolutely enough. |
