I have always believed that the best holidays begin with a small disaster, and our trip to Nowe Warpno did not disappoint. We had been driving through Pomerania for the better part of six hours, my partner navigating while I handled the snacks and the occasional dramatic sigh about roadworks near Szczecin. The satnav had been chirping confidently about our estimated arrival time when, with perhaps two miles to go, I spotted what I was certain was a shortcut. A narrow lane, sun-dappled, inviting, definitely going in roughly the right direction. I persuaded my partner to turn. Reader, it was a dead end. Not merely a dead end, but a dead end belonging to an exceedingly territorial goose who objected to our three-point turn with the kind of sustained honking that still haunts my dreams. We reversed in shame, returned to the proper road, and arrived at our holiday home twenty minutes later with slightly wounded pride and a newfound respect for waterfowl.

The property itself, a modest wooden house tucked among pine trees, immediately softened the blow. We stepped out of the car into that particular warmth of late June, the air thick with resin and the distant suggestion of the Szczecin Lagoon. My first impression was of quiet, the sort that makes you realise how much noise you normally carry in your head. The house had a small terrace where we sat with lukewarm tea from our thermos, too lazy to boil the kettle properly, and simply breathed. A woodpecker hammered somewhere in the middle distance. The goose felt very far away.

We had arrived with ambitious plans for walking. The following morning, armed with a printed map that I had optimistically described as "probably still accurate," we set out for the coast path. The weather, which had been glorious at nine o'clock, began to shift with what I can only describe as meteorological mischief. By ten, clouds had assembled with theatrical speed. By half past, we were caught in a warm drizzle that felt less like rain and more like walking through someone else's lukewarm bath. We sheltered under a fisherman's shed near the water, watching our carefully planned coastal hike dissolve into damp comedy.

Here is where I must offer that gentle self-reflection. I am, by nature, a planner. I had mapped distances, estimated timings, packed appropriate footwear. What I had not packed was the flexibility to enjoy being slightly defeated by the elements. Standing in that shed, watching rain stipple the lagoon's surface, I felt the peculiar frustration of the organised mind confronted with chaos. My partner, who possesses the useful ability to find any situation amusing, simply laughed and produced a packet of slightly crushed biscuits from their pocket. We ate them in companionable silence, and something in my shoulders released.

The weather cleared by afternoon, as Polish summer weather tends to do, shifting from drizzle to dazzling sunshine with no apparent intermediate stage. We walked a shorter loop through the woods behind the village, where pine needles cushioned our steps and the air still held that post-rain freshness. It was not the dramatic coastal hike I had envisioned, but it was ours, shaped by circumstance rather than intention.

The days that followed continued in this pattern of adaptation. Morning walks along the lagoon when the weather held, woodland wanders when it did not. We learned to read the sky with the casual expertise of people with nowhere urgent to be. The warm weather, when it came, felt earned rather than guaranteed, and we walked more slowly for knowing it might vanish.

On our final evening, we returned to that same terrace where we had first arrived, goose-humbled and travel-weary. The sun set late, as it does that far north in June, and we talked about which walks we would do "next time," knowing perfectly well that next time would bring its own weather, its own wrong turns, its own territorial birds. That is the pleasure of it, I think. Not the plan, but the walking anyway.
