About Masuria
The satnav gave up on us about twenty minutes outside of Szarejki, which I suppose should have been my first clue that this holiday was going to be one of those "character-building" experiences my mother always bangs on about. We'd been driving from Olsztyn, full of confidence and petrol station coffee, when the road turned from tarmac to something that can only be described as "agricultural suggestion." My partner, ever the optimist, announced that this was "proper exploring territory." I, clutching a lukewarm cheese roll, felt less certain.

The mishap came at a junction that appeared to have been designed by someone who fundamentally disagreed with the concept of signage. Three roads, zero labels, and a dog watching us with what I can only describe as Polish scepticism. I chose left. The dog, I later decided, knew something. What followed was fifteen minutes of increasingly narrow track, culminating in a dead end at a farm where an elderly gentleman was operating some machinery that looked like it had been built during the Solidarity era. Through a combination of broken Polish, enthusiastic hand gestures, and what I now realise was probably accidental profanity, we established that we should have gone right. Or possibly straight on. The details remain hazy, but he was kind enough to turn his machine around and escort us back to civilisation, waving us off with a grin that suggested this happened to foreigners with depressing regularity.

By the time we actually found Szarejki, I'd developed a profound respect for anyone who navigated this landscape before Google Maps existed. The property sits among what I can only describe as aggressively peaceful woodland, the kind of quiet that makes you aware of your own breathing. Our cottage, one of several on the small estate, had that particular Scandinavian-Polish aesthetic that Novasol properties seem to specialise in: clean lines, lots of wood, and windows positioned specifically to make you feel like you're living inside a nature documentary.

The first evening, still slightly giddy from our navigational adventure, we decided to "just wander" rather than attempt any purposeful excursion. This proved to be the making of the holiday. Within ten minutes of leaving the cottage, we stumbled upon a small lake that didn't appear on any map I'd consulted, complete with a rickety wooden jetty and water so still it looked like you could walk across it. A local woman was fishing at the far end, and when she saw us hesitating at the treeline, she simply nodded and gestured to the jetty as if sharing secret lakes with lost English people was perfectly ordinary.

That became our pattern over the following days. Deliberately getting slightly lost. Taking the track that looked "probably fine" rather than the obvious path. We found a bakery in what I can only describe as someone's extended shed, producing pierogi that ruined all other pierogi for me permanently. We discovered a swimming spot where the water was somehow warmer than the air, populated by teenagers who looked at us with the tolerant amusement of people who know exactly how special their hidden place is.

The gentle self-reflection came on our fourth morning, sitting on that unmapped jetty with coffee made questionable by a travel kettle. I'd spent years planning holidays with military precision, checking reviews, optimising routes, ensuring every moment delivered maximum approved enjoyment. Yet here I was, genuinely lost in a foreign country, and feeling more content than I had on any perfectly orchestrated city break. There's something about Masuria's lake-scattered landscape that rewards the wandering, the slightly wrong turn, the willingness to look foolish in front of a sceptical dog.

We never did learn the name of that first lake, or the baker with the shed, or even the proper Polish for "we're hopelessly lost, please help." But we found something better, I think: the particular joy of a place that hasn't been fully mapped by the internet, that still keeps secrets for those willing to miss their turning and see what happens next.
