About Masuria
I have never been so relieved to see a sign for Ryn in all my life. Twelve hours after leaving Manchester, three flights, one very questionable airport sandwich, and a hire car that smelled faintly of pickled gherkins, I finally spotted the little green road marker and actually cheered out loud. That cheer quickly turned to a groan when I realised I had been driving with my rucksack on the roof for the last two miles. Still strapped down, thankfully, but looking rather windswept and sorry for itself. My waterproof jacket had made a bid for freedom somewhere near Gizycko and was probably now decorating a Polish pine tree.

The drive from Olsztyn had been gorgeous in that slightly exhausting way. Endless forests, shimmering lakes glimpsed through gaps in the trees, and more deer than I have ever seen outside of a nature documentary. I kept pulling over to let faster cars pass, mostly because I was too busy gawping at a heron to concentrate on my speed. By the time I reached Ryn itself, the sun was doing that golden late-afternoon thing that makes everything look like a postcard, and I was running on adrenaline and the last dregs of a travel flask of tea.

I found the property down a quiet lane, just back from the water's edge, and immediately forgot about my lost jacket. It was one of those traditional Masurian houses, all timber and character, with a proper garden that had clearly been loved by someone with patience and decent secateurs. Mine would look like a jungle within a fortnight. The key was exactly where the friendly email had promised, tucked in a little lockbox that I fumbled with for an embarrassingly long time. Three attempts, two wrong codes, and one muttered apology to a curious cat watching from next door's wall.

Stepping inside was like letting out a breath I had not realised I was holding. The smell of pine and beeswax polish hit me first, then the warmth. Whoever had prepared the place had left the heating on low, knowing a weary traveller was coming. That small kindness nearly finished me off entirely. I stood in the hallway with my ridiculous roof-battered bag and actually felt my shoulders drop about three inches.

The living area was simple and spotless, with wooden beams I had to duck under and a sofa that looked like it had supported several generations of afternoon naps. I tested this theory immediately and can confirm it is absolutely true. Through the window, I could see the garden sloping down towards trees, and beyond them, I knew from the map, lay Ryn Lake itself. I was too tired to walk down and check, but the promise of it felt almost as good as the reality.

I made the classic mistake of the exhausted traveller and attempted to unpack properly. This lasted approximately four minutes before I gave up and simply relocated my toothbrush to the bathroom, which was clean, bright, and had one of those excellent Polish showers with actual water pressure. British hotels, please take note.

By evening, I had managed a short wander down to the water's edge. The lake was mirror-calm, reflecting the last pink of the sunset, and somewhere out on the water a fish jumped with a satisfying plop. A man in a small wooden boat was rowing slowly past, presumably heading home for his supper. He raised a hand in greeting and I waved back like an overenthusiastic tourist, which of course I absolutely was.

Back at the house, I found some basic supplies left for me. Bread, butter, a few eggs, and a bottle of local beer chilling in the fridge. I sat at the little kitchen table with my feet up on a spare chair, eating buttered bread that tasted better than any restaurant meal I have had in months, and watched the darkness settle over the garden. The only sounds were owls somewhere in the trees and the occasional creak of the house settling, as if it too were relaxing after a long day.

I thought about my jacket, probably flapping forlornly in a forest somewhere, and found I could not care less. Twelve hours of chaos had delivered me here, to this quiet corner of Masuria, to a wooden house that smelled of pine and a lake waiting outside my window. Tomorrow I would explore properly, perhaps rent a kayak, definitely find a proper pier to jump off like an overgrown child. Tonight, I would sleep in a bed that was already calling my name, in a room where the darkness was actually dark and the silence was actually silent.

Some arrivals are smooth and sophisticated. Mine involved a roof-borne rucksack, a lost jacket, and a cat witness to my lockbox incompetence. But sitting there in that kitchen, with butter on my chin and a beer in my hand, I could not imagine a better way to finally reach Ryn.
