About Masuria
The melted chocolate requires explanation. I had stopped at a petrol station near Mragowo, spotted what I thought were proper Polish chocolate wafers, and tucked them carefully beside my suitcase. What I failed to account for was the August heat, which had turned my careful packing into something resembling a fondue experiment. Opening that boot was like investigating a crime scene. Brown smears everywhere. The wafers had become one with my beach towel. I stood there in thirty-degree sunshine, scraping chocolate off a flip-flop with a parking ticket, while a grasshopper the size of a biro watched in obvious judgement. But then I looked up, and the whole ridiculous mess suddenly felt worth it. The house sat among birch trees with that particular stillness you only get in high summer, when the lake beyond has warmed just enough to lose its morning chill. You could smell the pine resin baking in the heat, thick and sweet, and somewhere in the distance a motorboat puttered across Lake Ryn with that lazy, puttering rhythm that defines August in Masuria. The grass had that slightly bleached look of peak summer, the kind that crunches underfoot and leaves your ankles dusted with pollen. My first impression of the place was its generosity with shade. The covered terrace ran almost the length of the building, and I understood immediately why this mattered. By midday, the sun here has opinions. It presses down. It finds the gap in your hat. The previous owners had planted climbing vines with strategic intelligence, and now they formed a green curtain that moved in the lake breeze, casting moving shadows across the wooden table where I would later eat tomatoes that actually tasted of something. I dumped my chocolate-catastrophe luggage and walked straight down to the water, because that is what August demands of you in this part of Poland. The lake was that impossible colour - milky green near the reeds, then darkening to something almost black where the old river channel runs deep. Two teenagers were paddling kayaks with the exhausted enthusiasm of people who have been doing this for weeks and cannot imagine a life without it. I recognised that feeling. I had come from London, where the nearest water feature was a leaking pipe in my neighbour's ceiling. The house itself had that particular Masurian practicality. Thick walls for the heat, big windows for the light, a kitchen that expected you to cook proper meals rather than arrange takeaway. I found a bicycle in the shed with slightly flat tyres and a basket that had held someone's shopping for decades. The seasonal rhythm was everywhere - the firewood stacked for autumn, the swimming platform still in the water, the garden chairs positioned for maximum evening sun. That first evening, I sat on the terrace with a lukewarm beer from a shop in Ryn village, watching the light change over the lake. The chocolate disaster was forgotten. The sat nav was forgiven. August in Masuria moves slowly, deliberately, like honey warming in a jar. By the time the mosquitoes emerged - right on schedule, around half past eight - I had already decided to stay an extra day. Some places announce themselves immediately. This one simply waited, in the summer heat, until I was ready to notice. |
