About Masuria
The mishap, though. I must confess this. Somewhere around hour four, convinced I was being clever, I decided to take what looked like a shortcut on a forestry track. The track turned out to be a logging road. The logging road turned out to be actively in use. I spent twenty minutes reversing half a mile while a very patient Polish lorry driver watched with what I can only describe as theatrical amusement, arms folded, occasionally checking his phone. I waved apologetically. He saluted. I have never felt more British. But then Ryn appeared, and something in my shoulders unclenched. The town sits on a narrow strip between Lake Ryn and Lake Olsztyn, and the first thing that struck me was how green everything looked in that particular late-afternoon light, the kind that makes you feel you have arrived somewhere that operates on a different clock entirely. The main street is modest, unhurried, with a few shops and a restaurant or two, and the Teutonic castle rising at the far end like someone left it there by accident centuries ago and nobody could be bothered to move it. The property itself sits just outside the immediate town centre, close enough to walk for bread in the morning, far enough to feel properly removed. I found it down a lane of birch trees that seemed to close behind the car like a curtain. The house is a traditional Masurian style, timber-framed with that steep roofline you see across this region, designed for snow loads that presumably arrive with serious intent in January. In September, with the leaves just turning, it looked like the setting for a folk tale involving wise grandmothers and possibly a hidden treasure. The key was exactly where the instructions said, which sounds unremarkable but after my logging-road adventure felt like a small miracle. I pushed open the door and was hit by that particular smell of old wood and fresh air that only seems to exist in holiday houses that have been properly aired. The living area is simple, unpretentious, with exposed beams and furniture that looks like it has been chosen for comfort rather than any design statement. I ran my hand along the table and found the slight unevenness of genuine age, not manufactured rusticity. I did the thing everyone does. I checked every room, opened every cupboard, investigated the garden. There is a terrace with a view toward the lake through the trees, not dramatic, not staged for Instagram, just quietly there. I stood on it with a cup of tea made from a bag I found in the back of the car, because of course I had not yet located the shops, and felt something shift. The drive, the reversing, the sat nav's betrayal, all of it became part of the story rather than the irritation it had been an hour before. That evening I walked down to the lake shore, perhaps ten minutes on foot. The water was still, a few fishing boats tied up, a couple of locals sitting with rods and the patience I associate with people who have never once argued with a navigation system. I nodded. They nodded back. No conversation required. I went to bed early, slightly embarrassed by my own exhaustion, and lay listening to the absolute silence that only comes when you are genuinely away from everything. Somewhere an owl. Somewhere else, water lapping. Nothing else. I had arrived, finally, in every sense that matters. |
