About Masuria
The mishap was this: in my eagerness to stretch my legs and declare our arrival to the wilderness, I misjudged the width of the path by roughly the width of a medium-sized boot. Down I went, ankle-deep in what I desperately hoped was compost, flailing for balance and catching only a decorative birch sapling. My partner, ever supportive, simply said "nice one" and started filming. I have since been informed this footage lives on her phone under the filename "Mala_Fail.mp4". The name, I am told, is permanent. But here's the thing about Rus Mala: even from a flowerbed, it looks absolutely cracking. The place is proper old Masurian countryside charm, all timber and steep roofs and that particular hush you only get when there's more lake than people for miles around. I'd done my reading, of course. Masuria's the land of a thousand lakes, the Polish Lake District, the place where Warsaw folk flee when they've had enough of everything. What nobody properly explains is how immediately it swallows the noise out of you. One minute you're a man with compost in his trainer, the next you're noticing how the birch leaves actually sound different here, lighter somehow, like they're tapping out a welcome in a language you half-remember. The cottage itself sits maybe fifty metres from the tree line, and beyond that, I knew from squinting at maps during the endless drive, lay Jezioro Niegocin. Not that I could see it yet. The woods got there first. Rus Mala has that brilliant trick of feeling completely tucked away while still, apparently, being within stumbling distance of actual civilisation. I say apparently because at that moment, with twilight coming on and a woodpecker doing something percussive in the pines, civilisation felt like a concept I'd invented to cope with motorways. My partner had the key situation sorted while I was still scraping mud off my jeans with a twig. The door opened with that satisfying weight of old timber, and the smell hit immediately: wood resin, something faintly herby, and the particular clean-dustiness of a place that's been properly aired for guests. Not that "guests" feels right. It felt like borrowing a very organised friend's countryside retreat, the kind of friend who leaves decent coffee and doesn't padlock the good wine. I won't pretend I conducted a thorough inspection. I was too busy locating the kettle and the nearest window seat. The living area had that brilliant Polish cottage thing of being rustic without performing rusticity for tourists. Exposed beams, yes, but also a sofa you could actually nap on. A wood burner that looked like it knew its business. Windowsills wide enough for elbows and contemplation. I pressed my forehead against the glass, still slightly steaming from the kettle, and watched the last proper light leak out of the forest. The satnav had tried to drown us in a farm track near Ryn. I'd accidentally packed three left wellies and one right. My trousers were compost-adjacent. And I was already, completely, hopelessly sold on this ridiculous beautiful corner of Poland, on the particular silence of pines and lakes, on the promise of doing absolutely nothing purposeful for a week. The flowerbed had been worth it. |
