About Masuria
Masuria greeted us with that particular kind of Polish countryside silence that makes you realise how much noise your own brain normally makes. Pine trees everywhere, a lake glinting through the trees, and absolutely no mobile signal to speak of. My teenager looked personally betrayed. I felt something close to spiritual peace. The cottage itself sits low and unassuming, all timber and dark shingles, like something a thoughtful hobbit might build if hobbits were into Nordic minimalism. We stepped inside to that glorious hit of woodsmoke and proper central heating, the sort that actually warms your bones rather than just moving air about. The open-plan living space was dominated by a fireplace I immediately decided we would use constantly, practicalities be damned. My wife gave me a look that suggested she was already calculating the firewood budget. Here is where I must confess something. I had packed for this family break with what I can only describe as deranged optimism. Swimming costumes, hiking boots, a cricket set, three novels, a portable barbecue, and a fondue set. A fondue set. For a self-catering cottage in rural Poland. The fondue set remained in the car for the entire week, silently judging me from beneath the spare tyre. Some part of me clearly still believes I am the sort of person who spontaneously hosts alpine dinner parties. I am not. I am the sort of person who forgets to buy matches and spends twenty minutes trying to light a fire with a car cigarette lighter, which absolutely does not work and makes you look like a complete lemon in front of your own children. But back to those first impressions. The kitchen was properly equipped, not the usual holiday-home lottery of one blunt knife and a colander with a hole in it. The bedrooms were upstairs under sloping eaves, all pine panelling and views of nothing but trees. My daughter claimed the room with the little balcony immediately, citing seniority despite being the younger sibling. I did not argue. I had no energy left for arguments. I had bollard-related trauma to process. We dumped our bags and did what any sensible family does after a long drive. We went to the supermarket in Mikolajki, which sits maybe ten minutes away, and bought an irresponsible quantity of sausage, bread, and something called zurek that I became genuinely obsessed with by day three. The local shops know exactly what people like us need. No fondue ingredients, I noted. Not a single one. That first evening, we ate outside on the wooden deck as the light faded, watching bats appear above the treeline and listening to the lake doing its gentle lapping thing somewhere in the darkness. My teenager forgot to complain about the WiFi for nearly forty minutes. The fire I eventually lit with actual matches crackled away inside, waiting for us. I sat there with sausage grease on my fingers, slightly sunburned from the drive, and felt that particular cottage-holiday contentment settle over me. The simple stuff. Wood, water, quiet, and no particular place to be tomorrow. The bollard, I decided, could wait until the journey home. |
