About Masuria
But then we turned onto the lane leading to the house, and autumn in Masuria did what autumn in Masuria does. The birch trees were burning gold against the dark green of the pines, and the late afternoon light had that particular honeyed quality that makes photographers weep and poets write terrible verse. The mishap melted away like morning frost. The property sat back from a small lane, a traditional wooden house that looked as though it had grown organically from the landscape rather than been built upon it. Our host had left the key in the agreed spot, and I fumbled with the lock while my breath made small clouds in the October air. The door swung open and the smell hit me immediately: wood smoke, pine resin, and something else, something I eventually identified as the particular mustiness of a house that spends summer empty and comes alive again with the first chill. Inside, the seasonal influence was everywhere. The thick log walls made the rooms feel immediately cocooned from the gathering dark outside. Someone had left a basket of apples on the kitchen table, local varieties with names I couldn't pronounce, their skins mottled red and yellow like miniature sunsets. The wood-burning stove dominated the living space, and I felt an almost childish excitement at the prospect of lighting it later, something I hadn't done since childhood camping trips with my father. I wandered to the windows. The garden was surrendering to the season in the most dignified manner. Morning glory vines had turned papery and brown, clinging to the fence like old lace. A single late rose, some hardy Polish variety, still held a few battered pink blooms. Beyond the garden, a field sloped down to where I knew Lake Kalwa lay hidden by trees, the famous thousand lakes of Masuria beginning practically at the doorstep. The light was fading fast now, that particular autumn rapidity that always catches me out. At four o'clock it felt like evening; by five it was night. I found the lamp switches, warm yellow pools appearing against the darkening windows, and understood why the house came into its own in this season. In summer, one lives outside. In autumn, one lives in, and this place was designed for inwardness, for long evenings with books and the crackle of logs. My partner emerged from investigating the bedrooms, reporting that the duvets were satisfyingly heavy, the kind that weight you down like a gentle hand. We had packed for possibility rather than probability, bringing swimming costumes that now seemed optimistic, wellies that seemed essential. The Masurian autumn had made our decisions for us. I stepped outside briefly, the cold sharp enough to sting. Somewhere in the dark, an owl called. The stars were emerging with that particular autumn clarity, the Milky Way visible in a way city life had made me forget. I thought about the journey, the ridiculous detour, the mud-splattered car. Standing there, listening to the silence that wasn't silence at all but the small movements of a wood preparing for winter, I felt that particular gratitude that only comes after minor difficulty. The season had shaped everything: the journey, the arrival, the immediate impulse to shelter and settle. We would walk the lake path tomorrow, perhaps find mushrooms if the frost hadn't been too hard, certainly return with cold noses and the pleasure of warmth waiting. For now, there was the lighting of the stove, the unpacking of provisions, the slow unfolding into a place that felt, already, like somewhere we had always known. |
