About Masuria
I should have known the sat nav was up to no good when it confidently announced we had reached our destination while we were still staring at a field of very unimpressed cows. Four hours of driving from Gdansk, two petrol station coffees, and one spectacularly wrong turn down a track that grew progressively more agricultural had brought us to this moment. My partner, ever the optimist, suggested we ask the cows for directions. I suggested we check the actual address.

Nowa Wies Ostrodzka, as it turns out, was another mile down the proper road, past a small church with a red roof that looked like something from a postcard my nan would send. The sat nav sulked in silence as we finally spotted the wooden sign and turned onto the gravel drive, our little hire car crunching over stones like it was walking on crisps.

The first thing that struck me was the quiet. Not the uncomfortable, ominous sort, but the proper, deep quiet of somewhere that actually knows how to do countryside. You could hear the wind moving through the trees, the distant clank of a cowbell, and somewhere far off, the soft putter of a boat engine on the water. We stepped out of the car and just stood there, stretching limbs that had forgotten what vertical felt like, breathing air that tasted of pine and lake water and something vaguely herbal I couldn't identify.

The house itself was exactly the sort of thing you hope for when you book somewhere called a "holiday home" and pray it isn't code for "depressing bungalow with suspicious carpet." Wooden beams, proper shutters, a little terrace with a table that practically demanded a cold beer and a slow afternoon. My partner immediately claimed the hammock strung between two birch trees, testing it with the cautious enthusiasm of someone who has been betrayed by garden furniture before. It held. She looked insufferably smug.

I fumbled with the key box, because of course I had written the code on my phone and of course my phone had died somewhere around Olsztyn. The backup code, scribbled on a receipt from Dover, lived at the bottom of my bag beneath three maps, a half-eaten packet of Polos, and a sunglasses case containing no sunglasses. Classic me, really. The organisational skills of a distracted squirrel, as my mother fondly puts it.

But here's the thing about that little moment of chaos, standing in the warm afternoon with my bag's entire contents spread across the bonnet like some bizarre car boot sale. It forced me to stop. To actually be there, rather than rushing through the motions of arrival, already mentally planning dinner or tomorrow's activities. The sun was doing that lovely golden thing it does before evening, the kind of light that makes even my terrible packing situation look almost picturesque.

When the door finally opened, the smell of wood and clean linen welcomed us in. Simple, solid furniture, a kitchen that looked genuinely cookable-in rather than decorative, windows framing views of green that went on and on. I found myself grinning like an idiot, the sort of unguarded grin that only comes when something has genuinely surprised you in a good way.

We unpacked badly, explored minimally, and spent that first evening on the terrace with local beer and cheese from a shop we'd passed in Ostroda, watching the sky turn colours that no phone camera could properly capture. The sat nav remained in the glove box, ignored and unrepentant. I didn't care. We were here, slightly lost no longer, and already plotting which lake we'd attempt to navigate tomorrow, preferably with more success than we'd managed finding the house.
