About Masuria
I should have known the sat nav was up to no good when it tried to send me through what looked like someone's vegetable patch. Twelve hours after leaving Manchester, three ferries, one questionable motorway service station schnitzel, and a tense moment where I genuinely considered whether my hire car could ford a small stream, I finally rolled into Najdymowo. Exhausted, slightly hysterical, and absolutely convinced I had taken a wrong turn into a particularly committed episode of Escape to the Country.

The mishap, you ask? Oh, that came about forty minutes earlier. I had stopped at a petrol station to buy what I thought was a bottle of water. Turns out, Polish labelling and my GCSE German were not the formidable linguistic team I had imagined. I glugged back what was essentially sparkling mineral water with a ferocious amount of magnesium, then spent the final stretch of the journey desperately hoping the countryside would provide adequate cover. It did not. The roads around Najdymowo are charmingly, maddeningly exposed. I have never been more grateful to see a wooden gate in my entire life.

But then, suddenly, there it was. The property sat among trees with that particular stillness you only get when a place has been quietly waiting for you. I stumbled out of the car, legs complaining, and just stood there for a moment. The lake was visible through a gap in the foliage, grey-blue and utterly peaceful in the late afternoon light. Somewhere, a dog barked in that lazy way that suggests absolutely nothing urgent is happening anywhere in the world.

The house itself had that wonderful Scandinavian-meets-Polish-lakeside thing going on. Clean lines, lots of wood, enormous windows that seemed almost greedy for the surrounding greenery. I fumbled with the key box, dropped the code sheet, retrieved it from beneath a shrub, and finally got inside. The smell hit me immediately - that impossible combination of pine, fresh air, and something faintly smoky that made me want to hibernate there until spring.

I made the classic mistake of the overexcited holidaymaker and did a full tour before unpacking. Living room with its absurdly comfortable-looking sofa and that view. Kitchen that actually had decent knives, which felt like an almost aggressive level of consideration. Bedrooms upstairs with sloped ceilings that I immediately knew I would forget about and bang my head on at least twice. The bathroom had underfloor heating, which I turned on immediately despite it being September and perfectly mild. Some luxuries simply cannot be refused.

I brewed terrible coffee with the magnesium water before realising my error, laughed at myself rather more loudly than necessary, and started again with proper tap water. Standing on the little wooden deck with a steaming mug, watching the light change over the lake, I felt something shift. The journey, the water incident, the sat nav's apparent vendetta against me - all of it dissolved into something else. That particular holiday feeling where you suddenly cannot remember why you ever thought staying home was a sensible option.

A family of ducks paddled past, completely unbothered by my presence. I raised my mug to them in a small, private toast. The evening was coming in soft and cool, and somewhere in the distance, I could hear what I chose to believe was a fish jumping rather than anything more mundane. Tomorrow, I would explore properly. Maybe attempt the kayak that sat temptingly by the water's edge. Perhaps walk to the nearby village and attempt to buy actual water without international incident.

But for now, I simply stayed where I was, slightly damp from the lake breeze, gloriously warm from the underfloor heating below, and entirely content with my own small corner of Masuria.
