About Masuria
I have never been so relieved to see a sign for Morag in all my life, and that includes the time I accidentally got on the wrong train to Swansea. Six hours of driving from the Eurotunnel, two questionable service station coffees, and one spectacularly ill-judged attempt at pronouncing "Olsztyn" to a petrol station attendant later, there we were. Tired, slightly hysterical, and in desperate need of whatever this Polish lakeside property had to offer.

The mishap, because there always is one with us, happened roughly forty minutes from our destination. I had appointed myself navigator, a role I take far too seriously given my track record. "Turn left at the next junction," I announced confidently, tapping my phone screen with the self-assurance of someone who had never once been correct about directions. My other half, who knows me too well, actually did it. We promptly found ourselves on a gravel track that grew narrower and more agricultural with every metre, until we were essentially driving through someone's beetroot field. A very nice someone, as it turned out, who emerged from a shed to point us back toward actual civilisation with the patient expression of a person who has redirected many lost Britons in his time.

When we finally crunched up the proper driveway to the property, I was prepared to weep with gratitude. What greeted us was better than tears. The place sits among mature trees with that particular stillness you only get near water, and through a gap in the foliage I could already see the glint of what I later learned was Lake Skiertag. The house itself has that satisfying solidity of traditional Masurian construction, all timber and sensible proportions, with a covered terrace that practically begged for a gin and tonic and absolutely no further driving whatsoever.

The key was where the owner said it would be, which sounds like a small thing but after our beetroot detour felt like a minor miracle. Stepping inside, the smell hit me immediately - that clean, woody scent of a place that gets properly aired and properly used. The living area opens up with exposed beams and a wood-burning stove that I immediately began fantasising about, despite it being September and still perfectly mild. The kitchen was unexpectedly well-equipped, which mattered because I had grand plans of cooking local fish and zero plans of moving the car again that evening.

I wandered out to the terrace while my partner investigated the bedrooms with the intensity of a property surveyor. The garden slopes gently down toward the lake, and someone had clearly put serious thought into the planting - not manicured, but purposeful, the sort of garden that knows what it is doing. A heron lifted off from the reeds as I stood there, too slowly for alarm, too elegantly for me not to feel momentarily inadequate about my own arrival.

What struck me most, I think, was the particular quality of the quiet. Not absence of sound, but presence of peace. Somewhere a dog barked across the water, a tractor droned in the middle distance, and beneath it all the soft, ancient silence of pine forest and lake. I thought about our gravel-track misadventure and found I could not muster any proper annoyance. Perhaps getting slightly lost is the price of finding somewhere that feels properly found.

My other half appeared with two mugs of tea made from the supplies we had brought, and we stood there on that terrace as the light began to soften, not saying much, not needing to. The wood-burning stove would have to wait for cooler evenings. The local fish would have to wait for morning. For now, there was tea, and stillness, and the particular satisfaction of having arrived somewhere that already felt, against all my usual scepticism, something like home.
