About Masuria
Three-point turns in a hire car on Polish farm track, as it turns out, are excellent for building character. And mud. Mostly mud. But then we crested this little rise, and there it was. Our Klebowo place, sitting pretty among pine trees with the afternoon sun doing that golden thing it does in Masuria. All that stress evaporated faster than my promises to read the map properly next time. The house had this lovely honest quality to it - wooden cladding, proper pitched roof, nothing trying too hard. A proper cottage, not some architectural statement piece. I liked it immediately. The key was in one of those little lockboxes that always make me feel like I'm cracking a safe, and then we were in. That first breath of a holiday house is always telling, isn't it? This one smelled of pine and something faintly herby, and the heating had clearly been on for us. Small things, but they matter. The children thundered upstairs to claim beds - inevitable squabble over who got the room with the better view of the garden - while I stood in the kitchen doing that holiday ritual of opening every cupboard to see what we were working with. Decent pans, which is rarer than you'd hope. A kettle that didn't look like it remembered the Cold War. I allowed myself a small victory nod. The garden sloped down toward trees, and beyond them I could glimpse water glinting. One of Masuria's thousands of lakes, practically on the doorstep. That was the thing that sold me on this trip, really. The promise of simple, watery, Polish-lake-district pleasure. No grand itinerary, no must-see sights an hour's drive away. Just lake, forest, and whatever pace we fancied. I made the rookie error of claiming I'd "pop to the local shop" for milk before realising I had absolutely no idea where said shop might be, and my phone was now refusing to acknowledge Polish existence. My partner, who had actually read the welcome pack, directed me to a little village store about ten minutes' walk. I took the car anyway, obviously. Some habits die hard. That evening, with the children finally asleep and a bottle of Zywiec from that same shop doing its work, I sat on the little terrace and listened to proper silence. Not London silence, which always has traffic or aircraft or someone's telly. Actual silence, broken only by whatever creature was making that rhythmic clicking noise in the trees. Probably something that would feature in my children's nightmares if I identified it. I thought about our farm track adventure and smiled despite myself. There's something slightly pathetic about a middle-aged man getting lost by technology, yet here I was, and somehow the getting lost had become part of the thing. The story we'd tell. I needed that reminder, I think, that holidays work best when you surrender a bit of control. Let the Sat Nav fail. Let the track get muddy. Let Poland be Poland, with its pine-scented cottages and mysterious clicking creatures and lakes waiting for tomorrow's swimming attempt. The beer was cold. The silence was golden. And I had absolutely no intention of checking my work email. |
