About Masuria
I should have known the Sat Nav was up to no good the moment it told me to turn left into what turned out to be a duck pond. There we were, three hours out of Warsaw, two children in the back asking if we were nearly there yet for the forty-seventh time, and me trying to convince my wife that yes, I definitely knew where I was going. The ducks seemed unimpressed. One of them gave me a look I can only describe as deeply Polish and faintly judgmental.

Masuria, for those who have not had the pleasure, is lake country. Proper lake country. Thousands of the things, glinting between pine forests and meadows, connected by rivers and canals that make the whole place feel like it was designed by someone who really, really liked water. We were headed for a place called Kaplityny, which I had been practising saying in the car until my daughter informed me I sounded like I was coughing up a crisp. Children are brutally honest on long car journeys.

The final approach was down a track that my wife described as "rustic" and I described as "character-building." Our family car, which has never once been off tarmac in its entire suburban existence, protested every pothole with a new and interesting rattle. We passed a field of cows who watched us pass with the resigned expression of locals who have seen many lost tourists. Then the trees opened up and there it was: a proper wooden house, painted that deep red-brown that seems to belong exclusively to Scandinavian and Polish countryside, with a veranda running along the front and a lake gleaming beyond it like a promise.

I will admit to a small moment of smugness. I had booked this place. I had found it, I had navigated us here (mostly), and now here we were with our own little slice of Masurian heaven. The smugness lasted approximately four seconds, which is how long it took me to discover that I had packed my wife's wellies, my son's wellies, and somehow managed to bring only one of my own, the left one, from a completely different pair. I stood on that veranda in the fading afternoon light, holding a green wellie in one hand and a black one in the other, and understood that this would set the tone for the week.

But here is the thing about a place like Kaplityny: it simply does not care about your footwear situation. The house had that particular smell of wood and lake air that makes you exhale properly for the first time in months. The children immediately vanished upstairs to fight over who got which bedroom, which meant they were occupied and we could stand on that veranda with cups of tea and watch the water turn golden as the sun went down. A heron lifted off from the reeds at the water's edge, all gangly elegance and self-importance.

My wife found the actual pair of wellies in the boot of the car, because of course she did. She did not say "I told you so," which is how I knew we were both properly on holiday. The kitchen had everything we needed for proper cooking, none of that holiday-let minimalism where you get one blunt knife and a saucepan with no handle. There was a fireplace we immediately decided we would use that evening, weather be damned, and a garden that sloped gently down to a small jetty where a rowing boat sat waiting with the patient stillness of boats everywhere.

By the time we had unpacked the essentials and the children had established a complex treaty regarding bedroom territory, it was properly evening. Someone, somewhere, was having a barbecue. The smell drifted across the water, mixed with pine and that particular cool freshness you get when the day has been warm but the night is coming in clear. We made sandwiches for the children, opened a bottle of wine for ourselves, and sat on those wooden steps as the first stars came out over the lake.

I thought about the ducks, and the Sat Nav, and my mismatched wellies. I thought about how we would spend the next few days doing very little of any great significance: swimming from that jetty, perhaps, or pottering about in the boat, or walking through forests where the pine needles make everything soft and quiet. There would be ice cream in nearby villages, and probably more arguments about who got to steer the boat, and definitely more moments where I would be reminded that I am not, in fact, the competent outdoorsman I occasionally pretend to be.

That is the particular magic of a place like this, I think. It does not ask you to be anyone other than exactly who you are, slightly chaotic luggage arrangements and all. The lake does not care if you have matching wellies. The forest does not mind if you get lost. The house simply holds you, warm and wooden and solid, while the water laps at the shore and the herons go about their business.

We stayed out until the mosquitoes finally drove us in, which in Masuria is nature's way of telling you bedtime has arrived. The children fell asleep almost immediately, exhausted by the journey and the excitement and the treaty negotiations. My wife and I sat by that fireplace, which we did indeed light, and watched the flames without talking much, which is another thing that proper holidays allow.

I went to bed that night with the window open, listening to the water and the night sounds and the particular silence of a place that is not trying to be anything other than what it is. Somewhere in the darkness, I suspect those ducks were still judging me. I did not mind. We had arrived, more or less in one piece, and the week stretched ahead of us like the lake itself: calm, unhurried, and full of possibility.
