About Masuria
I should have known the sat nav was up to no good the moment it tried to send me through what looked like a cabbage field somewhere outside Olsztyn. Twelve hours of driving from Dover, two ferries, and a growing suspicion that my GCSE German was not going to help me one jot in rural Poland. My partner, ever the optimist, kept saying "nearly there" from roughly the outskirts of Berlin onwards. She was lying, bless her.

The real trouble started at the village shop in Burdag itself. I had stopped to buy milk, bread, and what I hoped was butter, armed with nothing but a phrasebook and excessive confidence. I emerged with three litres of kefir, some unidentifiable smoked sausage, and no butter whatsoever. The shopkeeper found my pointing and hopeful facial expressions absolutely hilarious. I found them slightly less so when I dropped the kefir in the car park and it exploded across my sandals. There is a particular smell of fermented milk on leather that follows you, I can tell you. It is not a good smell.

But then we turned down the track to the house, and honestly, the kefir incident began to fade. The property sits among proper Masurian countryside, not manicured garden-centre perfection but that lovely, slightly wild Polish landscape of meadows and scattered birch trees. A red squirrel shot across the path in front of us, which my partner took as a sign of good fortune. I took it as a sign to brake sharply and spill the surviving groceries across the footwell.

The house itself is one of those traditional Masurian wooden places, extended and done up for holiday letting without losing its character. Dark timber walls, a steep pitched roof, and a covered terrace that immediately made me think of morning coffee and evening beer. The key was in the lockbox exactly where the booking said it would be, which sounds like a small thing, but after a day of travel mishaps, it felt like a genuine triumph. I may have punched the air. My partner definitely rolled her eyes.

Stepping inside, the first thing that struck me was the smell of pine from the timber walls, that lovely clean scent you only really get in proper wooden houses. The living area is open and light, with a wood-burning stove that I immediately decided we would use that evening regardless of whether the temperature justified it. There is something deeply satisfying about building a fire in a strange house, a small ritual of making the place yours. The kitchen was better equipped than my own at home, which is not difficult admittedly, but still welcome. I ran my hand along the wooden dining table and thought, yes, this is where we will eat that mysterious sausage and pretend it was intentional.

The bedrooms are simple, uncluttered, with views out to the garden and the fields beyond. I stood at the window of the main bedroom and watched a heron flap lazily across the meadow toward what I later learned was Lake Skiertag, barely ten minutes walk away. The quiet was remarkable. Not silence exactly, there were birds and distant farm sounds, but that particular rural quiet that makes your shoulders drop without you noticing.

I changed out of my kefir-scented sandals and we walked the garden as the light began to go. The property has a decent plot, grassy with some mature trees and space to sit out. We found a rope swing hanging from an old oak, slightly too high for dignity, which my partner attempted with the enthusiasm of someone who has not considered the physics. I did not attempt it. I have learned my limitations.

That evening we lit the fire, opened the wine we had actually managed to buy correctly, and sat with the doors open to the terrace. The sausage turned out to be excellent. The kefir, once I had hosed off my sandals, was surprisingly pleasant too. I sat there with my feet up, watching the last light fade across the meadow, and felt that particular holiday feeling of having arrived somewhere that might actually live up to the journey. The sat nav had been wrong about the cabbage field, but it had got us here eventually. Sometimes that is enough.
